Seeing Isn’t Believing: New AI May Tackle ‘Manipulation of Reality’ Amid Rising Threat of Deepfakes
However fun and entertaining the deepfake technology may appear, concerns have arisen that it could be used for malicious purposes, such as spreading misleading or defamatory information.
Last year saw the rise of the threat of deepfakes – a technique used to combine and superimpose images and videos onto others using a machine learning algorithm, creating hyper-realistic but fake content.
AI buffs have split into two major groups – one working to make such images and video more realistic, and another developing tools that would tell users whether a video has been manipulated or not.
A team of researchers from the University of California at Riverside and the R&D firm Mayachitra have developed a novel deep-learning architecture that can detect content-changing manipulation.
This is not the first study on the problem, but this neural network appears to have gone further in recognising deepfakes than its predecessors.

Russian airstrike destroys jihadist convoy near strategic base in Idlib
BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:40 P.M.) – The Russian Air Force carried out a powerful attack on a jihadist convoy that was leaving a key base inside the Idlib Governorate on Saturday.
According to a military source in nearby Hama, the Russian Air Force attacked a Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham convoy as it was traveling from the Taftanaz Airbase near Idlib city.
The Russian Air Force reportedly carried out several more strikes around the Taftanaz Airbase before shifting their attention to the northwestern region of the Hama Governorate.
Typically, the Russian Air Force concentrates their strikes along the demilitarized zone; however, as of late, they have been launching airstrikes as far north as Idlib city and the town of Taftanaz.

At Least 5 Shot, 3 Killed, Saturday in Gun-Controlled Baltimore
At least five people were shot, three fatally, Saturday in gun-controlled Baltimore, Maryland.
WJZ reports the first shooting, which proved fatal, occurred around shortly after 1 pm. Officers rushed to the scene and “found a man with gunshot wounds to his body.” He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Fox 5 News reports that two double shootings occurred minutes apart later in the day.
The first of the two occurred at 10:47 pm, leaving a 26-year-old male dead and a second individual injured. The second of double shootings occurred at 10:56 pm, fatally wounding a 19-year-old male. A 17-year-old was “shot in the back” during the shooting as well.
On July 25, 2019, Breitbart News reported eight persons were shot in one night of violence in Baltimore. One of the shooting victims died from his wounds.
