Washington (AFP) - Matteo Salvini, the far-right Italian deputy prime minister, met with top US officials in Washington on Monday and spoke of his "closeness" to President Donald Trump's administration.

Salvini, whose League party won the most votes in last month's European Parliament elections in Italy, met with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and later with Vice President Mike Pence.

Pence tweeted that the two had a "great meeting," discussing "the U.S. – Italy relationship and our shared priorities."

"The transatlantic alliance is stronger than ever!" the vice president wrote.

Salvini and Pompeo "reiterated the value of the United States' longstanding relationship with Italy, including as NATO Allies and members of the G7" group of advanced economies, the US State Department said.

During a news conference at the Italian embassy, Salvini, whose party is often at odds with their coalition partners, the Five Star Movement, spent little time discussing his own role in cracking down on boats trying to save migrants crossing the Mediterranean from North Africa.

He focused instead on a "shared vision" with the Trump administration of "Iran, Venezuela, Libya, the situation in the Middle East, Israel's right to exist" and "concerns about Chinese arrogance towards Europe and the African continent."

Like Trump, he called for dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin in order to "bring Moscow closer to the system of Western values rather than be driven into Beijing's arms."

Also like the US president, he denounced alleged financial mismanagement at the United Nations, and defended massive tax cuts despite concerns in Brussels about Rome's soaring debt, and went as far as calling for a "Trumpian budget" in his country.

  • Invitation to Pompeo -

Salvini distanced himself from Italy's signing of an accord that saw it become the first G7 member to join China's "New Silk Road" global trade network, which the United States views with suspicion as a means of expanding Chinese hegemony.

And he denounced his government's failure to formally recognize Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido as interim president, as Washington and other European countries have done.

She must be racist, right?

The violence erupting in Baltimore, Maryland, is not about the death of Freddie Gray.

The riots igniting from Gray’s unexplained death while in police custody is the symptom of the larger disease; failed progressive policies.

Baltimore, like most troubled urban areas, had been under Democrat control for years. Progressive rule for the predominately black city residents has resulted in high unemployment rates, low incomes and high crime.

According to the U.S. Census, Baltimore city is 63 percent black with an unemployment rate of 8.4 percent (February 2015) and the median average income is about $41,000, much lower than the state average income of about $73,000.

Democrat Elijah Cummings, for instance, has represented Maryland’s 7th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for almost 20 years and his progressive policies have harmed his constituents.

One example of Cummings’ misguided progressive policies is his focus on climate change.

Sadly for Baltimore residents, Cummings believes climate change is one of the biggest risks facing the nation.

In 2009, Cummings voted for the American Clean Energy and Security Act – the cap-and-trade bill that President Obama said would make electricity bills “skyrocket” and in 2013 Cummings wrote to Darrell Issa, Chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, urging him to hold hearings on climate change.

“Although some may continue to disregard the science, this report warns that climate change is real, it is here now, and the economic consequences to our nation will be catastrophic if Congress ignores it any longer.”

So there you have it. Cummings is worried about climate change and not high unemployment or the high rate of black on black crime in Baltimore.

In Baltimore, 90 percent of homicide victims were black and 90 percent of the suspects were black.

The reality is regulations aimed at addressing climate change is going to make life worse for blacks by raising energy prices and decreasing job opportunities.

The biggest risk to Baltimore is not climate change but politicians such as Cummings that back polices that harms black Americans.
