With AI and Data, it’s “Junk in, Junk Out”

At a recent fixer session we facilitated for Brian Hankey to analyze data from a payday loan company to determine what factors predict loan repayment as part of a practical AI course we’re building, I ran into the concept of “cleaning” the data. It’s a concept I’d encountered before in reading about AI, but it ended up being much more important than I would have expected. Here’s what I learned:

First, data cleaning covers a variety of techniques to prepare data for use by all kinda of AI algorithms (more on that in a later post). This includes things like turning all the data into numbers (male and female into 1 and 0), making sure it’s all on the same scale (not some data from 1–5 and others from 0–100), and getting rid of data that won’t be useful or could be misleading. JP Morgan, Barclays, RBS among big banks facing UK class action over Forex rigging

Major global banks including Barclays, JP Morgan, RBS, UBS, and Citigroup are being sued by investors over allegations they rigged the global foreign exchange (Forex) market.

According to US law firm Scott + Scott, the claim which is estimated to be worth more than £1 billion (US$1.24 billion), was filed at the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) on Monday.

The “massive” action is a “perfect” case to be brought as a so-called opt-out collective class action for breaches of UK or European Union competition law, the Scott + Scott lawyer David Scott told Reuters.

“It is a very difficult case to put together individual damages which are significant enough,” he said.

Michael O’Higgins, the former chairman of British watchdog the Pensions Regulator, who is leading the lawsuit, said the total value of the claim would depend on the number of Forex trades executed in London for UK-domiciled units.

Given the size of London’s Forex market, the total value would likely exceed a billion pounds, O’Higgins said.

“Even on a relatively conservative assumption it’s certainly a billion pounds and possibly several,” he said, adding that “Markets should be fair as well as free and in this case the markets weren’t fair.”

Forex manipulation was one of a series of rate-rigging scandals to engulf the global financial sector. Criminal traders at some of the world’s biggest banks conspired to manipulate the $5.4 trillion-a-day market, while making handsome profits in the process.

Major US University Under Fire Over Speech Guide Deeming Words ‘American’, ‘Male’, ‘Straight’ Toxic

The ‘Inclusive Language Guide’, an internal best practices manual for employees of Colorado State University, came to prominence last week after free speech activists took note of some of its more contentious language rules.

Colorado State University has been forced to defend itself following criticisms over a controversial draft language guide listing words and phrases like “America/American”, “Hispanic”, “homosexual”, “Indian”, “male/female”, “normal person”, “straight”, and “transgendered” as something that “should be avoided” over their potential to cause offence.

For example, the guide’s rationale on the word “American” being offensive was that “the Americas” actually “encompass a lot more than the United States”, with the use of the word said to “eras[e] other cultures and depic[t] the United States as the dominant American country.”

Salvini refuses to let own coastguard ship carrying migrants dock in Italy

taly’s national populist interior minister Matteo Salvini has stated that Italian ships carrying migrants will only be allowed to dock in Italian ports if and only if the EU agrees to relocate them first.

According to an Il Giornale report, migrants were first picked up by an Italian fishing boat named the Accursio Giarrantano, but after the ship was refused access to a Maltese port they were forced to wait a whole day before the migrants could be transferred to a coastguard vessel by the name of Bruno Gregoretti.

As this is being written, just five of the migrants have left the ship after it was permitted to dock at the Italian island of Lampedusa last week. Italian authorities cited health concerns as the reason the migrants were allowed on Italian territory.

Before allowing to coastguard vessel to dock, Italy’s government dispatched a message to the European Commission requesting for it to organize the relocation of the migrants on board. So far, Brussels has made contact with member states but not one has agreed to take the migrants.
