Priests accused of sex abuse turned to under-the-radar group…

Money, shelter, aid…

Unmarked buildings, quiet legal help for accused priests

DRYDEN, Mich. (AP) — The visiting priests arrived discreetly, day and night.

Stripped of their collars and cassocks, they went unnoticed in this tiny Midwestern town as they were escorted into a dingy warehouse across from an elementary school playground. Neighbors had no idea some of the dressed-down clergymen dining at local restaurants might have been accused sexual predators.

Full Coverage: The Reckoning

They had been brought to town by a small, nonprofit group called Opus Bono Sacerdotii. For nearly two decades, the group has operated out of a series of unmarked buildings in rural Michigan, providing money, shelter, transport, legal help and other support to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Catholic priests accused of sexual abuse across the country.

Again and again, Opus Bono has served as a rapid-response team for the accused.

When a serial pedophile was sent to jail for abusing dozens of minors, Opus Bono was there for him, with regular visits and commissary cash.

When a priest admitted sexually assaulting boys under 14, Opus Bono raised funds for his defense.

When another priest was criminally charged with abusing a teen, Opus Bono later made him a legal adviser.

Chicago Named 'Rat Capital' Of United States

The "rat capital" of the United States is Chicago, according to a study done by the apartment search site RentHop. There were over 50,000 complaints about rodents filed by Chicago residents in 2017, more than double the number of complaints received by New York City, the runner-up for the dubious title.

The Windy City is an ideal place for rodents because the "abundance of garbage and buildings…makes it a great location for these rats to seek shelter and food for survival."

The neighborhood with the most complaints was Logan Park, with 2,448 lodged last year.

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation pushed back on the study saying "rodent complaints are not an accurate indicator of the rat population," according to the Chicago Tribune.

Rats in Chicago

The species of rat found in Chicago is the Norway rat. The name is rather misleading as this species originated in Asia centuries ago.

The rat has an average life span of six to twelve months. Beginning at the age of two to three months, a female rat can produce four to seven litters per year with each litter containing eight to twelve pups. Females can become impregnated within 48 hours after giving birth. The number, size and survivability of litters produced depends upon the amount of food and shelter available.

They prefer fresh food, but will eat many things such as pet food, dog feces, garbage and plants. If food is scarce, the strongest rats may even eat the weakest and young.

Norway rats prefer to live in burrows in the ground. They are excellent climbers and swimmers and most active at night. They have very hard teeth and can chew through wood and plaster or any other material that is softer than their teeth. They can crawl through holes the size of a quarter, tread water for three days and land unharmed after a five-story fall.

Norway rats live in colonies that have very well defined territories. The strongest colonies get the best places to live.

The risk of disease being spread from rats to humans is very real. By their very nature, rats carry a variety of potentially infected fleas and ticks which may be passed on to people.

Both exterior and interior rat problems should be reported to 3-1-1 or click on the button below to submit a report online.

Rat control crews ramp up efforts to fight city rodent issues

HICAGO (WLS) – The City of Chicago is ramping up its efforts to fight rats in the city. The Department of Streets and Sanitation has added seven new rat control crews that will service more neighborhoods on a daily basis and improve response time for 311 calls.

"With the increase in crews, we're able to do at least four to six, instead of one or two a week. And that is a lot door-to-door contact with the residents which we find is very important," said Josie Cruz, deputy commissioner of rodent control. "We can address more 311 calls and do a lot of preventative baiting."

After the last mayoral administration approved ten new crews, the department cited a positive impact: an 18 percent drop in rodent complaints over the past two years.

Cruz said that a lot of the work at the Bureau of Rodent Control is focused on education, ensuring residents know how to prevent rat infestations.

'Racism is a part of who he is': Mayor Lightfoot criticizes Trump's Twitter attack on Baltimore

CHICAGO (WLS) – Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is calling out President Donald Trump Monday after a series of controversial tweets aimed at an African American congressman and the city of Baltimore.

Mayor Lightfoot accused the president of making racism a central part of his political strategy.

"Racism is a part of who he is. It is a part of his strategy. So having this constant conversation about, 'Oh my gosh is this remark racist?' Yes of course, that's part of his strategy," Lightfoot said.

On Saturday, Trump attacked U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings in a series of tweets, calling Maryland's seventh district a "disgusting rat and rodent infested mess."
