Cuomo signs law allowing candidates, officials to use campaign funds for child care

New York politicians will now be able to use campaign funds for child care costs incurred during campaigns, while in office or while holding a party position.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D), who signed the bill Tuesday, said the change in election law aims to help more women run for office on the state and local level.

"Women face too many barriers when it comes to running for office and frankly child care expenses shouldn't be one of them," Cuomo said in a statement. "By signing this measure into law, we will build on the historic progress we've made toward gender equality and empower more parents — and mothers in particular — to seek public office to ensure the decision makers in Albany reflect the people they are elected to represent.”

The bill goes into effect in 60 days.

The state law follows the Federal Election Commission (FEC) ruling last year allowing candidates to use funds to cover child care cost. New York Democrat Liuba Grechen Shirley, who was unsuccessful in her bid to oust Republican incumbent Rep. Pete King, had reached out to the FEC, prompting the change.

Shirley tweeted Tuesday thanking Cuomo and state Sen. Shelley Mayer (D) and Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (D), backers of the bill, on the new legislation.

“Last year when I put in the request to use campaign funds for childcare, I was worried the FEC would deny my request & I didn’t know how I could continue my campaign. Now, campaign funds for childcare is becoming the norm,” she tweeted.

Trump to Cummings: ‘Take your Oversight Committee and go to Baltimore’ to investigate corruption

President Trump issued a sharp message Tuesday to House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md.: the real oversight is needed in the congressman’s home district.

Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn, Trump was asked about the ongoing feud between him and Cummings since Trump made derogatory remarks about Baltimore, which Cummings represents.

“Take your Oversight Committee and go to Baltimore, you’ll learn a lot,” Trump said. This was after the president doubled down on his past criticism by calling Baltimore “the most unsafe city” in the U.S., despite receiving $15 billion in federal funding.

The district received $15.7 billion in federal aid in fiscal year 2018, Newsweek reported after examining a USAspending.gov database.

“All of this money goes there and take a look at it,” Trump said.

When a reporter pointed out that Cummings is not the city’s mayor and does not have full control, Trump claimed that Cummings has been the constant for more than two decades.

“He’s seen these mayors get thrown out … they’re all friends of his,” Trump said.

"Rep. Cummings is a champion in the Congress and the country for civil rights and economic justice, a beloved leader in Baltimore, and deeply valued colleague," Pelosi said. “We all reject racist attacks against him and support his steadfast leadership."

The president insists there was nothing racial about his remarks.

“I’m just telling you the facts,” he told reporters Tuesday.

MAJOR SOLAR STORM TO STRIKE EARTH THIS WEEK AS "BLACK SUPERMOON" LOOMS

SOURCE: MICHAEL SNYDER

An absolutely massive hole has formed in the upper atmosphere of the Sun, and our planet will align with that hole later this week. Once the alignment happens, Earth will be bombarded by a “solar storm”, and nobody is quite sure yet how bad it will be. If the storm is relatively minor, we could just experience a few disruptions to satellite communications and see some pretty lights in the sky.

But if the storm is really severe, our electrical grid could be fried and we could experience widespread power outages. According to the Express, “the solar storm will hit Earth on July 31 or August 1″…

Earth’s orbit around the Sun will soon align with a coronal hole – a hole in the Sun’s upper atmosphere – and solar particles will subsequently bombard the planet after they have made their way through space. Experts predict that the solar storm will hit Earth on July 31 or August 1. People in the northern hemisphere are likely to be treated to northern lights – or aurora borealis – as the solar winds bombard the upper reaches of the planet.

Of course North America is in the northern hemisphere, and so we could be in for a direct hit.

Since our satellites are outside our atmosphere, they are the most vulnerable during a solar storm. If some of our satellites get fried, that could affect GPS navigation, cell phone communication, and satellite television services…

But if the storm is powerful enough, electronic devices all over the country could be damaged and our power grid could potentially be disabled. According to astrophysicist Scott McIntosh, a really bad solar storm could potentially even cause some of our major cities to be without power for months…

According to Farmer’s Almanac, some people call the second moon in a single month a Black Moon—this is the definition that’s used most often, and the one that applies to the full moon happening on July 31st. The term has also been used where no new moon occurs in a month, which only happens every 5 to 10 years in the month of February.

This particular moon on July 31st is called a Black Supermoon because it will be near its closest point to Earth.

Not sure how much stock to even put into this other than it's arrival seems to be coincidentally aligning with the first of the declass rollout.

Number of migrants reaching US border falls to 5-month low: Mexico

Mexico's top diplomat said Tuesday that the number of migrants reaching the U.S.-Mexico border hit a five-month in July.

Secretary of Foreign Affairs Marcelo Ebrard told reporters Tuesday that 87,648 migrants reached Mexico's northern border in July, the lowest number since February, when 76,533 migrants were caught or rejected at the border and the recent high of

Compared to June, the July number marks a 16 percent fall in the number of people caught or turned away by U.S. authorities at the border.

The fall comes after the U.S. and Mexico clinched a deal in June in which the Central American country committed to protect its southern border in a bid to cut down on the number of migrants traveling to the U.S. through Mexico.

The number cited by Ebrard includes apprehensions – or people caught by U.S. authorities after illegally crossing into the country – and those who turned away by U.S. border agents at designated ports of entry.

Mexico has long collaborated with the United States in border management and intelligence gathering but the efforts by the Central American country have accelerated after the June deal.

Ebrard is seen as the chief architect of that deal, which came about after President Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Mexican goods if migrant numbers did not decrease.

But the deal has put Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in a difficult position, as he promised a humanitarian approach to migration management, and Trump remains unpopular in the country.

Mexican public opinion, however, has turned against Central American migrants.
