Crackdown Coming? China Gathers Forces On Hong Kong Border Amid Unrest

Massive anti-Beijing protests which have gripped Hong Kong over the past month, and have become increasingly violent as both an overwhelmed local police force and counter-protesters have hit back with force, are threatening to escalate on a larger geopolitical scale after the White House weighed in this week.

With China fast losing patience, there are new reports of a significant build-up of Chinese security forces on Hong Kong's border, as Bloomberg reports:

The White House is monitoring what a senior administration official called a congregation of Chinese forces on Hong Kong’s border.

From nearly the start of the protests which began over a proposed extradition bill (which would see Hong Kong citizens under legal accusation potentially extradited to the mainland) interpreted as major Chinese overreach inside historically semi-autonomous Hong Kong, officials in Beijing have suggested an "external plot" afoot, more recently alleging the hidden hand of the United States.

The latest charge made Tuesday by mainland government officials is that the still escalating Hong Kong unrest is the "creation of the US" — something which the admin official speaking under anonymity to Bloomberg firmly denied.

On Monday Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said during a press interview that "protest is appropriate" and that "we hope the Chinese will do the right thing" regarding respecting Hong Kong's historic "one country, two systems" status. This was enough to elicit a quick response alleging US meddling out of Beijing on Tuesday.

Trump Is Silent After Bankruptcy Wave Devastates Major Coal Producers

President Trump has routinely pumped the coal industry, calling it "indestructible" and telling everyone on social media that "coal is back."

Coal consumption just crashed to its lowest level in four decades, and a string of bankruptcies from major coal producers has many people asking: Where is President Trump?

Blackhawk Mining, LLC., a coal producer with 2,800 workers in Kentucky and West Virginia, is the latest major producer to file for bankruptcy, according to filings.

The Lexington, Kentucky-based natural resource company said in court documents that it has $1 billion in debt, compared to $165 million in Ebitda in 2018. The company plans on shedding at least $650 million in debt.

The latest announcement comes after a string of bankruptcy proceedings from coal companies in Kentucky.

Blackhawk operates 19 underground mines and six surface mines in Kentucky and West Virginia, considered one of the biggest producers of metallurgical coal in the nation. The company borrowed massive amounts of debt, "anticipating that the pricing environment in the metallurgical coal market would improve starting in late 2015."

Kamala Harris Receives Donations From Big Pharma Executives Despite Claim She Rejects Them

Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, while releasing a new health care proposal yesterday, balked at criticism that private industry interests would seek to influence her election effort.

Ian Sams, the national press secretary for the Harris campaign, told CNN on Monday that Harris “is not taking any money from pharmaceutical executives.”

Federal Election Commission campaign finance records, however, show that the California senator has received thousands of dollars from executives at drug companies this year, most of which has not been returned.

Donors include Therese Meaney, a vice president at Endo Pharmaceuticals, a company that manufacturers opioid painkillers, who has given $1,250 to the Harris campaign; Ted Love, the president and chief executive of Global Blood Therapeutics, a startup biopharmaceutical company, who gave $2,800; J. Dana Hughes, a vice president at Pfizer, gave $250; Damian Wilmot, an executive at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, gave $1,000; and Jeffrey Stein, the chief executive of Cidara Therapeutics, another drug startup, who gave $1,000.

There has been some effort by the Harris campaign to return drug company money. Records show the campaign returned a $2,700 donation from John Guthrie, an executive at Pharmaceutics International Inc., in March, for example. Why some drug company donations were accepted and returned, while others were not, is not immediately clear.

During his remarks, Sams swiped at the Bernie Sanders campaign, suggesting that the demand by Sanders that candidates reject drug and insurance money is hypocritical because Sanders also “took some money from pharmaceutical companies before he gave it back.” Sams added that the donations “blurs the line of what the actual issue is here.” The Sanders campaign returned donations from employees at drug companies last month when they were flagged by ABC News.

In an email, Sams reiterated that the campaign does not accept drug company executive money. Sams said the campaign had already returned the donations from Meaney and Stein, though he did not say when the money was returned. Many of the donations, including donations by Meaney and Hughes, were made early in the year —and were not refunded in either the first or second quarter filings. Sams also said the campaign is in the process of returning the donation from Global Blood Therapeutics’s executive. He did not address the other donations.

Ben Carson to visit Baltimore as liberals defend crime-ridden city following Trump’s criticism

Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Dr. Ben Carson will travel Wednesday to Baltimore, Md to spread awareness about the city which President Donald Trump described as a “rodent infested mess,” the Daily Caller has learned.

The trip comes after Trump has faced criticism for his comments about the city, which were directed towards Maryland Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings for not focusing on the city in his district. Carson also defended the president’s comments on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” on Monday night, saying the president wants to see people stop suffering in Baltimore.

“While I was there, I worked on a lot of issues with many politicians, including Elijah Cummings, particularly in terms of childhood education and improving the life for the people,” Carson said on Fox News. “And I think what President Trump was trying to say is that rather than spending your time talking about, you know, our brave border agents and investigating endlessly things that you can’t find anything on, why not spend some time working more for these people, you know, who are suffering?”

Carson spent most of his medical career practicing at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, working there for over 30 years.
