Black Moon
is coming tomorrow: What that means
We've seen all kinds of interesting phases of the Moon, from "Super blood Moons" to "full worm supermoons" to even the stunning Strawberry Moon.
But tomorrow, July 31, will mark a rare occurrence for Earth's natural satellite — a phenomenon known as a Black Moon. The rare celestial event will occur tomorrow in North America, marking the first occurrence since 2016. The rest of the planet will see the black Moon on August 30.
Although there is no one single definition of a black Moon, according to Time and Date, it is most commonly used to represent the second new Moon of a month. This rarely happens outside of leap years, as lunar cycles largely take 29 days to complete. But every 32 months or so, there are two full Moons in a month, with the first being known as a blue Moon.
New Moons are not able to be seen, as they travel "across the sky with the Sun during the day," according to EarthSky.org. "But the gravitational influence of the new moon and sun combine to physically affect our water planet, which people along the ocean coastlines may notice in the coming days."
Other meanings of a black Moon include a third new Moon in a season of four new Moons; no new Moon in February; and no full Moon in February.
Tomorrow's black Moon will also be a supermoon, which means the new Moon happens at the closest point to Earth in its monthly orbit.

Congressman's daughter uses car with official plates to drive for Lyft
Elijah Cummings: Congressional tags have been removed
No, that's not Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings driving for Lyft in his downtime.
But his daughter, Adia, who borrowed her father's car, may have made her passengers feel like VIPs since the black Honda she uses was sporting official congressional license plates.
Lyft is a company that provides rides to subscribers who summon a car to pick them up using an app on their phone.
The Washington Post first reported that Cummings' owned up to loaning his car with its official tags still on it to his daughter so she could make some extra money.
Someone posted a picture of the car with a Lyft sticker on a D.C. blog called "Popville" and asked which member of Congress worked for the company. The picture showed the vehicle with Maryland plates that read "US Congress" and the number "7," which designates Cummings' district in Baltimore, and the "Reliable Sources" gossip column at the Post solved the mystery.
Cummings explained in a statement to CNN that he loaned the car to Adia while she was attending Howard University.
"In an effort to earn some extra money to pay her expenses at school, she signed up for a part-time position with one of the ride-sharing companies. They, in turn, gave her a sticker to apply to the windshield of the car," Cummings said.
The congressman, who is the top ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee and another panel investigating the attacks in Benghazi, says after he spoke with his daughter, the congressional tags have been removed. He took responsibility for the situation, saying, "I apologize for not having removed the license plate before loaning the vehicle to her."
Cummings' office told CNN that the Honda is a personal car, not one leased or purchased through his campaign or official office account.
According to Lyft's requirements posted on their website, drivers must be 21 years old, have a smartphone and "must be a covered party on your car's in-state insurance and have in-state license plates." The website advertises that individuals can make up to $35 per hour with the company by signing up as a driver.
Lyft riders in D.C. can still be picked up by Adia, since Cummings isn't taking the car away.
"My daughter has now graduated from Howard and I could not be more proud of her," Cummings said. "I have told her she can continue to use my car while she pursues full-time employment."

Symbolism will be their downfall.
CNN’s ‘over-the-top’ debate coverage mocked: ‘This is like the Olympics for them’
CNN’s two-night Democratic primary debate was slammed by critics before it even began as the liberal network’s coverage was compared to the Olympics because of its excessive buildup.
“This is like the Olympics for them, but the sport is Trump name-calling,” political satirist Tim Young told Fox News.
The ratings-challenged network had most of its on-air personalities broadcasting from the Motor City since the beginning of the week. On Tuesday, a countdown clock informed viewers of the exact minute that the much-hyped debate would begin. The network even touted its elaborate stage setup, which was quickly mocked by critics.
“CNN says it took eight days to build this ridiculous set with nine filled semi-trucks and more than 500 lights. It's nice to see that CNN is gearing up for climate change questions,” Media Research Center vice president Dan Gainor told Fox News.
NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck told Fox News that the event is an example of why CNN’s reputation has diminished since President Trump took office.
“CNN's over-the-top coverage has shown how unserious they are about fostering sober, substantive coverage of what could very well be the most important election of our lifetimes,” Houck said. “CNN has brought everything that people across the political spectrum have come to despise… countdown clocks, massive panels, 'College Gameday'-like sets, snarky chyrons, self-righteous 'Reliable Sources' newsletters about their supposed greatness, and refusing to look inward about why their ratings are so pitiful to name a few.”
CNN’s in-house media pundit Brian Stelter sent a “special edition” of his newsletter, hyping Detroit’s downtown area being “transformed into a CNN-land” around the Fox Theatre.
“There are signs everywhere, an outdoor 'game day' set where anchors have been broadcasting since Sunday,” CNN’s Oliver Darcy wrote.
Stelter then noted that his “personal favorite detail” is that questions “posed by the moderators will appear on the bottom of the screen.”
CNN was widely ridiculed earlier this month when it dedicated an hour of primetime coverage to an elaborate, NBA-lottery style event to determine which night specific candidates would take the stage. This in in addition to the controversy surrounding far-left opinion host Don Lemon, who was chosen to moderate alongside journalists Jake Tapper and Dana Bash. Houck called it a “putrid decision” to allow the outspoken Lemon to grill 2020 hopefuls.
“This is like Trump-hating porn for CNN. They have 2 nights of piles of people calling him racist, misogynist… I can only imagine the anchors are welling up with tears of joy,” Young said.
