A refugee pushed a boy under a train and reignited Germany's race debate

On Monday morning, just before 10am at the country’s biggest train station, a man on the platform suddenly pushed a 40-year-old woman and her eight-year-old son into the path of an oncoming inter-city train from Dusseldorf.

The boy was reportedly killed immediately, while his mother rolled to safety between train tracks.

Witnesses said passengers and onlookers were weeping in grief. “People collapsed, howling,” one eyewitness from the train said.

The 40-year-old suspect, arrested after trying to flee the scene, was a man from Eritrea in Africa – a fact seized upon by far-right elements. It was later revealed he had undergone psychiatric treatment.
