Wildfires have spread to around 3 million hectares of mostly remote forest, an area almost the size of Belgium, according to the Federal Forestry Agency, wafting smoke across Siberia and prompting several regions to declare states of emergency.
Environmentalists have dubbed the fires an ecological catastrophe and a petition circulated online by an ecologist from the Siberian city of Tomsk had garnered 824,000 signatures as of Wednesday demanding authorities take tougher action.

Teen Tries To Rob Nashville Man at ATM. Teen Is Shot Multiple Times.
Kenneth K. Cathey, 19, of Hickory Hollow Place, received multiple gunshot wounds and is being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He will be arrested upon his discharge from the hospital.
The man who shot Cathey, Tevin Kelly, 25, of Nashville, said he opened fire in self-defense after Cathey approached him with gun drawn as he was making a deposit at the bank’s ATM. Kelly said he initially saw Cathey, whom he did not know, sitting across the parking lot from the bank. Kelly said he was initially suspicious of Cathey because he was wearing a red hoodie in warm weather with the hood tightly drawn around his face.
After being shot, Cathey ran a short distance in the parking lot and collapsed. Kelly said he saw that Cathey dropped his gun, which he (Kelly) picked up. Kelly said he then drove to his girlfriend’s apartment before deciding to return to the scene and speak with police. Kelly gave detectives the pistol he said Cathey was carrying. Kelly has been cooperative in this continuing investigation.

Escaped calf killed behind Connecticut Home Depot sparks outrage
The butcher shop's manager apologized for the killing but said his employees feared the animal would cause serious injury to someone if not stopped.
The slaughter in a Home Depot parking lot of a calf that escaped a butcher shop and led employees on a chase has sparked outrage by animal lovers and elicited racist messages online.
The calf broke out of the Saba Live Poultry store in Bloomfield, Connecticut, on July 13 and ran behind the store across the street. A contractor who was doing construction work on the butcher shop even tried to shoot the animal with a bow and arrow, to no avail.
Dashboard camera footage from a Bloomfield Police officer who briefly followed the animal by car shows the animal eluding several people who tried to corral it.
When employees of the butchery finally did wrestle the calf the ground, Badr Musaed, who works in the shop, cut its throat.
