What you are suffering from is actually quite common (in fact, back pain is one of the most common reason why patients present to a physician in the USA)

 

From what you described, you are most likely correct, it is probably a disk hernation of some sort.

 

Expect your doctor to do a neurological exam of your lower extremities and if there are any neurological deficits (like no knee reflexes), doctor will order an MRI to see if surgical intervention is necessary.

 

Before surgery is considered, you will likely be referred to a pain management specialist for an xray guided pain injection in that area.

 

Of course, there is high likelihood that you wont need surgery at all, and all that may be prescribed is pain medicine (like Tylenol) and mild rest.
