Edward Snowden is releasing a book about his role leaking classified government documents disclosing U.S. surveillance programs, his publisher announced Thursday.

Metropolitan Books, an imprint of Macmillan Publishers, said Snowden's memoir, "Permanent Record," will be published on Sept. 17.

"Edward Snowden, the man who risked everything to expose the US government’s system of mass surveillance, reveals for the first time the story of his life, including how he helped to build that system and what motivated him to try to bring it down," the publisher said.

Snowden faces U.S. charges and is reportedly living in exile in Moscow.

“Edward Snowden decided at the age of 29 to give up his entire future for the good of his country,” John Sargent, CEO of Macmillan, said in a statement to The Associated Press. “He displayed enormous courage in doing so, and like him or not, his is an incredible American story. There is no doubt that the world is a better and more private place for his actions. Macmillan is enormously proud to publish ‘Permanent Record.’”

Financial details were not disclosed, according to the AP, which added that the project was largely a secret and identified under code names in internal documents.
