UN chief appoints interim UNRWA head amid probe

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Thursday an interim head of the UN’s Palestine agency amid a review of misconduct allegations within senior levels of the department, Anadolu Agency reports.

Guterres appointed the UN’s supply chain chief, Christian Saunders, as acting UNRWA director to “ensure operational continuity,” the UN said in a statement.

Saunders began his career in the UN at UNRWA in 1989.

Guterres urged member states and other UNRWA contributors to “continue their support for the crucial work performed by the Agency” after Netherlands and Switzerland suspended their contributions after an internal ethics review found misconduct within the agency, most seriously within the agency’s senior team including its commissioner-general, Pierre Krahenbuhl.

Al-Jazeera published the report’s findings Monday.

It suggests UNRWA’s inner circle, including Krahenbuhl, Deputy Commissioner-General Sandra Mitchell – who left her post in late July, Chief of Staff Hakam Shahwan – who departed in early July and Senior Adviser to the Commissioner-General, Maria Mohammedi, be considered for removal from the agency.

The report asserts they “have engaged in misconduct, nepotism, retaliation” as well as “other abuses of authority.”

Established in 1949, UNRWA is engaged in relief and human development works supporting nearly 6 million registered Palestinian refugees.

Senior Labor figures including Anthony Albanese argued against anti-corruption watchdog

Three of Labor's most senior figures including Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese argued against a new federal anti-corruption watchdog because some feared it would "make it very hard to govern".

In revelations that could blunt Labor's criticism of Prime Minister Scott Morrison's proposal to tackle corruption in Canberra, former leader Bill Shorten faced fierce internal opposition during debates over the policy, including from his tight-knit leadership group members Penny Wong and Tony Burke.

Several Labor shadow cabinet members have told The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age that Mr Shorten faced "strong resistance" in his attempts to convince colleagues of the merits of taking a powerful new corruption fighting body to the May election.

Some in shadow cabinet, including members of the NSW Right faction, drew on the "disastrous" experience of the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption and its "political show trials".

Others had warned as early as 2016 that a new body would discourage "frank and fearless advice" from senior public servants and "make it very hard to govern" if Labor had won the May 18 poll.

Shadow attorney general Mark Dreyfus led the charge to develop the corruption watchdog with the full support of Mr Shorten and then deputy Tanya Plibersek.

But several Labor sources said the trio encountered initial opposition during "very willing internal debate from others including Mr Albanese, Senator Wong, Mr Burke and former senate leader Stephen Conroy.

"They didn't want it at all initially," one member of Mr Shorten's shadow cabinet said.

"They pushed back and back, and while there was some sympathy about some of the arguments they clearly did not understand the public mood around this stuff."

Another said: "Bill was adamant it was needed. Others were not. They made it known very strongly but the leader won out, as he should have."

Mr Shorten first backed the creation of a national anti-corruption agency in January 2018 to counter corroding confidence in public institutions.

Head of Navy SEALs Says 'We Have a Problem' Following High-Profile Scandals

Some Navy SEALs are failing to maintain good order and discipline, and their one-star commander is warning them to clean up their behavior.

Rear Adm. Collin Green, the head of Naval Special Warfare Command, sent a letter to his troops the day after a SEAL platoon was ordered out of Iraq amid reports of a sexual assault and drinking in the war zone. Green says he's not yet sure the elite force has a "culture problem," but they do have a discipline problem that "must be addressed immediately."

"We have a problem," he wrote in the one-page letter dated July 25, which was first reported on by CNN. "… Good order and discipline is the foundation for every military organization and it is a leadership responsibility. As Commander, I own it. … We must now take a proactive approach to prevent the next breach of ethical and professional behavior in our formations."

Green ordered all Naval Special Warfare commanders to call their troops into formation, whether deployed or stateside, within two weeks of the letter.

"I want all hands to understand that 'we have a problem' and that this is our main effort and my top priority," Green wrote.

Durham Investigators Have Obtained an Audio-Taped Deposition of Joseph Mifsud

Investigative reporter John Solomon joined Sean Hannity on Thursday to discuss the latest developments on the ongoing John Durham investigation on the origins of the junk Trump-Russia witch hunt.

Solomon told Sean Hannity that Western asset Joseph Mifsud has already testified and the Durham investigators have already obtained a taped deposition of his testimony.

Last week former US Attorney Joe diGenova also reported that US Attorney John Durham and IG Horowitz have already interviewed Joseph Mifsud.

John Solomon: I can report absolutely that the Durham investigators have now obtained an audio-taped deposition of Joseph Mifsud where he describes his work, why he targeted Papadopoulos, who directed him to do that, what directions he was given and why he set that entire process of introducing George Papadopoulos to Russia in motion in March of 2016. Which is really the flashpoint the start point of this whole Russia collusion narrative.
