Go to an indoor shooting range that lets you rent firearms and try out the gun you're thinking of buying as well as a couple others.
If you like one of them, thank the owner of the gun store for helping you decide and then buy the gun from him.
You'll need to fill out some paperwork and there's a waiting period after you pay for the gun before you can take it home.
It's not as hard as you might think, but since it's a large purchase I recommend spending some time on it to do it right. Buyer's remorse is way worse with guns than with other things, and used guns typically sell pretty poorly (you'll lose a lot of your initial investment)

Why not? It's relatively cheap and if you're lucky and know how to strike up a conversation, other gunAnons might let you try out their hardware a little bit. That's how I got to fire a Desert Eagle and some other heavy shit back before there was a rental range in my area. Couple bad-ass old anons at the range brought in a lot of cool shit and were glad to let me try them out, and showed genuine interest in my far-less-awesome firearms. Can be good times out on the firing line.

I find that the nutso ones usually go out in the desert to shoot, because any gun range worth a shit has RULES and safety procedures and if you do stupid shit you'll get thrown out bodily in a hot second. This has a way of weeding out numb-nuts and the mentally unstable\psychotic types.

I'm not sure I agree or would be willing to go that far, but Ronald Reagan made at least one titanic fuck-up (not sure if intentional, accidental, or just colossal incompetence). He signed the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. This bill gave amnesty to several million illegal aliens. This one move instantly turned California from a Red state into a Blue state, and California has given its electoral votes to Democrats in every election since 1992 (In 1988 the IRCA had not yet taken full effect and California went to Republicans).
I bring this up here often, and no one can really seem to come up with a good reason why Reagan did this. It always seems to be "Well the Democrats were supposed to fix the border in exchange for Reagan signing this." To which my only response is "Then he's a fucking dumbass, because he didn't get it in writing, and the Democrats pushed him over a barrel, got everything they wanted, and gave nothing back in return, while California Republicans have gotten fisted in the asshole for 27 years as a result and the Democrats get 55 free electoral votes forever."
