Red Cross/Crescent/Crystal
In 1863, the ICRC, the future International Committee of the Red Cross met to together establish an international recognized symbol to aid wounded soldiers due to war. This needed to be invariably recognized, simple and identifiable from a distance.
Here the Red Cross was established having a bold red cross on a white background. In 1864 The First Geneva convention agreed that the emblem was easily produced and put to practice because of his distinguishable contrasting colours. The concluded to use this symbol as they believed that religion was a healing purpose so they used the Knights Of Saint John’s symbol as they were known as being ‘hospitallers’ and eventually did the red cross. Modern international humanitarian law was born.
The cross evolved from a medieval design to a more modern and sleek design. It then evolved to the Maltese eight point cross which represented each auberge that were situated in Malta.
War was taking place in 1876 to 1878 between Russia and the Ottoman Empire; Turkey. They believed that the emblem was offensive to their Soldiers as in the great siege Knights attacked Turkish men thus making the cross a bad symbol for them. The Red Crescent was established.
In 2005 an emblem known as red crystal was created as to not offend anyone and to unite both the Red Cross and Red Crescent. While in 2007 all three symbols are put together.
