WE ALREADY KNEW: Pentagon confirms it is training terrorists in Syria

Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR) of the US-led international coalition that fought ISIS confirmed to Sputnik that the coalition is training the armed rebel group Maghawir al-Thawra.

The CJTF-OIR commented on the statement by the head of the Russian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Operational Directorate General that the US is training a large armed rebel group in Syria, emphasizing that the group was effective in combating Daesh.

The statement stated that the coalition’s partner force near Al-Tanf in Syria is Maghawir al-Thawra and that MaT has demonstrated its effectiveness in containing Daesh and maintaining security within Al-Tanf’s conflict reduction zone.

The statement explained that they will continue to train and advise coalition forces near Al-Tanf in pursuit of Daesh’s lasting defeat and to establish conditions for regional stability.

Armed rebel training

Previously, Colonel General Sergei Rudskoy said the United States was training 2,700 militants from a Syrian opposition group near the US-controlled 55-kilometer zone around its unauthorized military base in Al-Tanf, in Syria.

Rudskoy also stated that the US Air Force was helicoptering part of the militants to the east bank of the Euphrates River as it completed training.

According to the head of the Chief Operating Officer of the Russian Military Staff, the militants were charged with carrying out attacks against government forces and also destroying oil and gas infrastructure.

The US is training a large armed group of terrorists in Syria, said Sergei Rudskoy, chief of the Operational Directorate-General of the Russian Armed Forces.

According to the chief operating officer, some of the combatants trained in the US- controlled Syrian Al-Tanf zone are being transferred in US Air Force helicopters to the Euphrates region.

The best trained saboteurs are sent to areas controlled by the Syrian government to destabilize the situation, he added.

“Their mission is to sabotage, destroy the oil and gas infrastructure and carry out terrorist actions against government units. The presence of such groups is noted in the As-Suwayda, Palmira and Al-Bukamal areas,” said Rudskoy. The total number of militants reaches 2,700, according to him.

Secret transfer of terrorists

Russian intelligence has also revealed information about the secret transfer and concentration of fighters in the southwest part of Syria’s ceasefire Idlib, and preparations are being made for an offensive.

“Intelligence is currently recording the covert transfer and concentration of fighters in the southwest part of the ceasefire zone. At least 500 terrorists from Tahrir al-Sham have been relocated from the northern parts of Idlib province. Preparations are being made for an offensive, “said Rudskoy.

In addition, according to the chief operating officer, the number of foreign-made weapons, including multiple rocket launchers, in the hands of terrorists is also increasing.

“In cooperation with our Turkish colleagues, we are taking steps to identify and eliminate terrorist equipment, weapons and ammunition depots,” he added.

The Fed Rate Cut Shows the Fed Is Either Clueless or Lying. Or Both.

Yesterday, the Fed's Federal Open Market Committee lowered the target federal funds rate by 25 basis points, dropping it to 2.5 percent. The Fed had last changed its target rate in December of 2018, when it raised the rate from 2.25 percent to 2.50 percent.

It now looks like 2.5 percent is the highest the rate is going to get for the foreseeable future. After all, according to the Fed, the current state of the economy is "moderate" and the job market "strong." If the economy needs a rate cut under these conditions, it's hard to imagine a situation in which the Fed will be enthusiastic about another rate increase.

On the other hand, it's entirely possible the rate cut is not motivated primarily by economic data, but by politics. Donald Trump has repeatedly and publicly pressured the Fed for a rate cut for many months.

It could be that the political pressure has had the desired effect. Economists — who are generally childlike in their naïve and fanciful views of how the political system works — actually appear to think the Fed is "independent" from the political system, or that it at least has been in the past. But that's not the reality, and the Fed, for all its protestations of independence, may simply be doing what it has always done. If this alleged independence appears to have diminished in recent times, of course, the difference is really only that Trump is simply more public about the pressure he applies. Past presidents and policymakers have tended to stick to applying pressure behind closed doors.

Fed Admits Economy Weaker than It Says

But, for the sake of argument, let's assume that the rate cut comes primarily as a result of Fed economists' consideration of the data.

If the conclusion was that a rate cut was now warranted, this tells us that the economy is not really as strong as the Fed has long pretended it to be. This has been obvious for years, of course. For a decade, the Fed told us the "recovery" was proceeding nicely, but "oh by the way, we don't date allow interest rates to increase to anything resembling even 1990s-type rates."

Al Qaeda Idlib “Militants” Rescued by Another “Ceasefire”, Israeli Airstrikes against Syrian Army Positions

On August 1, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies continued their advance on militants’ positions in northern Hama liberated the villages of Mushairifah, Aziziah, Abu Raeida Gharbi and Abu Raeida.

According to local sources, SAA units also pushed towards al-Zaka and al-Arbaeen, but were not able to capture these strongpoints of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham.

The former Syrian branch of al-Qaeda and its allies, especially Jaysh al-Izza, have reportedly suffered from heavy losses as a result of the recent clashes and intensified bombing campaign.

At least eleven militants of the Turkish-backed Suqour al-Sham Brigades were killed on August 1 when pro-government fighters raided their position near Ejaz in southeastern Idlib. The attackers reportedly used silenced weapons to kill everyone that was inside the position before withdrawing to the SAA positions near Abu Duhur airbase.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the raid was carried out by pro-government tribesmen from southeastern Idlib. However, the Military Media said that SAA’s Special Forces were employed.

Late on August 1, the Syrian state-run news agency SANA announced that the Damascus government had accepted a new ceasefire agreement in Greater Idlib despite the tactical success in northern Hama. The ceasefire entered into force on August 2.

A military source told the state-run agency that the ceasefire will be implemented as long as Idlib militants remain committed to the demilitarized zone agreement. The agreement reached in September 2018 says that radical militants and heavy weapons should be withdrawn from the demilitarized zone around Idlib. However, it was not implemented because militant groups just ignored it. Local sources say that it is unlikely that they will fulfill the agreement demands despite a new peaceful initiative.

On August 1, the Israeli military struck an SAA position at al-Buryqah hill in the province of al-Quneitra. Last week, a similar Israeli attack targeted military equipment of the army in the towns of Tell al-Harrah and Tell al-Ahmar.

Israeli and some Arab sources claim that the targeted positions hosted Hezbollah forces or even Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps personnel. Nonetheless, no evidence was provided to confirm these claims.

British Birth Rates Lowest Ever, Yet Population Continues to Rise

The birth rate in England and Wales has fallen again and is now at the lowest level since records began, yet the population of the United Kingdom continues to rise, underlining the massive impact immigration continues to have on the nation.

The latest statistics, which show live births have fallen by a tenth since 2012, largely driven by lifestyle choices leading women to start families later and later and the inevitable fertility problems that come with that, come months after similar statistics showed Scotland too was experiencing record-low birth levels.

Figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) in London show were 657,076 live births in England and Wales in 2018, a decrease both in real terms of three per cent in one year, and a fall in the fertility rate to 1.7 children per woman. To maintain a stable population, it is broadly accepted that a nation or group’s fertility rate must be at least 2.1 children per woman.

In context, 657,076 live births mean there were 11.1 live births per 1,000 total population in 2018, the lowest number since records of this type began in 1938. The figure has fallen by half since 1947, the record year for births in the immediate post-war era. As the ONS notes, all metrics for births are now “at or near record lows”.

Remarkably, the fertility rate for women in England and Wales is now lower than during the darkest days of the Second World War, when military conscription saw huge numbers of young men taken away from their homes and loved ones and sent around the world to fight. During the course of the war over 800,000 British were killed, with casualties heavier among young people.

An analysis of the figures by the ONS offered some explanations for the changes, noting that women now delay having their first child later than ever and citing increased participation in education and the workforce for this trend. Since 2014, more women over 40 have children in a year than women under 20, and even with all the advances of fertility science and IVF, women over 40 still had more children in the year records began, 1938, than did in 2018.

UN Secretary General Urges US, Russia to Agree on 'Common Path' for Intl Arms Control

UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday called on both the US and Russia to find a "common path" toward international arms control.

"The Secretary-General expresses his deep regret at the ending of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty," reads a statement from the official's office. "He has consistently called on both the United States and the Russian Federation to resolve their differences through the consultation mechanisms provided for in the Treaty and regrets they have been unable to do so."

"He notes that, in the current deteriorating international security environment, previously-agreed arms control and disarmament agreements are increasingly under threat," the release adds, before noting the Secretary-General's emphasis on the need for a "common path" in order to "avoid destabilizing developments."

The statement goes on to note that the office calls on both Russia and the US to "extend New START and to undertake negotiations on further arms control measures."

The statement comes moments after US President Donald Trump told reporters that he believes that a new nuclear missile pact should include both Russia and China.

Border Patrol Agent Comforts Toddler Saved From Traffickers

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection shared a photo showing the moment a toddler was rescued by an agent after he was brought to the border.

A migrant with prior arrests had falsely claimed to be the boy’s parent so he could attempt to gain entry to the United States, but he was foiled by a DNA test, officials said.

The photo of a Border Patrol agent holding the boy was posted on the agency’s Instagram this week, showing the boy with his face blurred. It was captured at a processing facility in Donna, Texas.

Agents encountered a group of 12 migrants that was comprised of several families and some unaccompanied minors.

Border Patrol agents stated there was “an individual traveling with his alleged son” who had two prior immigration-related arrests in the El Paso area in the past month.

“Given the recent apprehensions and the age of the child, Agents requested the assistance of HSI to administer a rapid DNA test,” the agency wrote.
