The man behind the famous Bond gadgets is called Q, for Quartermaster. (A quartermaster is the military officer who supplies troops with matériel.) In the Dr. No novel, he’s called the Armourer, but his real name — Major Boothroyd — is the same as in the movies. The character appears in almost every Bond film (he’s not in Live and Let Die, Casino Royale or Quantum of Solace) and, though Peter Burton originated the role, he was played by Desmond Llewelyn in 17 of those movies, opposite every Bond so far except Daniel Craig. After Llewelyn’s death in 1999, John Cleese played Q in Die Another Day. The actor Ben Whishaw — best known for his breakthrough stage role as Hamlet — will take the part in Skyfall.
