Facebook “glitch” allowed adult pedophiles to openly chat with underage children… was it really a glitch?

Messenger Kids, a “safe” chat app that Facebook recently introduced for underage children and their friends to talk to each other, has already made the news in a not-so-good way for a serious design “flaw” that allowed adult pedophiles to join children’s “parent-approved” group chats.

According to reports, the “technical error,” as Facebook is calling it, allowed the “friends” of underage Facebook users to create group chats with adult Facebook users that had not first been pre-approved by these children’s parents. Facebook has since “turned off” the group chat feature, and issued the following statement directly to one of its infringed users:

“We found a technical error that allowed [CHILD]’s friend [FRIEND] to create a group chat with [CHILD] and one or more of [FRIEND]’s parent-approved friends. We want you to know that we’ve turned off this group chat and are making sure that group chats like this won’t be allowed in the future.”

Keep in mind that this was not a public announcement by Facebook, but rather a private message that was “sent to thousands of users in recent days.” Facebook claims the “glitch” only affected “a small number of group chats,” though the company offered no further specifics as to what caused the “technical error.”

“‘Thousands’ of group chats doesn’t sound like a small number to me, especially given that you have to multiply that vague figure by the number of kids involved in each one,” writes Stephen Green for PJ Media. “Worse, Facebook has a bad history of slow-rolling the truth when it comes to its many security issues.”

DHS confirms more Wisconsin hospitalizations, severe lung disease linked to vaping

State health officials say they’ve received more cases of teenagers and young adults hospitalized with severe lung disease linked to vaping.

Last week the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin confirmed eight teens were hospitalized in July with seriously damaged lungs.

Now that number is up to 11 cases in Door, Racine, Walworth, Dodge, Waukesha and Winnebago counties.

Seven other cases are under further investigation.

“We are currently interviewing patients, all of whom reported recent vaping. Our disease investigators continue to gather information about the names and types of vape products that were used in hopes of determining a common link,” said Wisconsin Department of Health Services Secretary-designee Andrea Palm.

A captured Israeli-Palestinian Islamic State group member has pleaded with Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to repatriate him.

Sayyaf Sharif Daoud made the appeal in an interview with Saudi channel Al-Arabiya published on Wednesday.

"I am asking Netanyahu… I am an Israeli citizen. I know that you are the prime minister of a democratic country," Daoud says in Hebrew.

"You do not discriminate between Arab, Jews and Druze. I am having a very tough time in this prison,"

The jihadist from Tel Aviv joined IS in 2015 and was captured by Kurdish-led forces in the Syrian city of Deir Ezzour.

FBI sex trafficking bust recovers 168 kids, some never reported missing

WASHINGTON — When FBI agents and police officers fanned out across the country last month in a weeklong effort to rescue child sex trafficking victims, they pulled minors as young as 11 from hotel rooms, truck stops and homes.

Among the 168 juveniles recovered was a population that child welfare advocates say especially concerns them: children who were never reported missing in the first place.

Advocates say the roundup reinforces the need for a standardized, nationwide approach to reporting children as missing, especially those absent from state foster care systems who are seen as most vulnerable to abuse. Concerns over unaccounted-for children aren’t new, but they’re receiving fresh attention amid heightened awareness of child sex trafficking. State and federal efforts are under way to streamline how police are alerted when kids go missing.

“This has been a movement that I would say over the last year has really galvanized,” said John Ryan, president of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Legislation pending in Congress would require child welfare agencies to alert police and the center, which has specialized response teams and other resources, within 24 hours of a child’s disappearance.

The current patchwork of state and federal policies has yielded what advocates describe as a fractured safety net with little accountability.

Though states may have policies encouraging child welfare agencies to report missing children to law enforcement, most don’t have laws requiring that notification, according to the missing children center. That means children can disappear without police knowing they’re missing or being directed to look for them.

Downtown Congestion Tax. Inspired by New York City, Washington, DC now wants to tax commuters who drive into the city with a congestion charge

The District of Columbia is moving to finally implement the tax on commuters it has sought for decades. The city’s recently adopted 2020 budget provided $500,000 for a study of congestion pricing due on July 1, 2020. City officials, bolstered by efforts to impose a toll on city streets in New York City, are hoping to raise millions with the new charge.

As adopted by the city council, the study is to provide “an analysis of the potential to raise revenue” by putting up toll booths on the bridges across the Potomac River that lead to the city, as well as a count of how much money could be made by tolling streets within the city. The tax would hit most of the people in the city, as three out of four workers in the District commute by automobile, and only 14 percent use Metro or buses.

Virginia motorists who work in DC — including thousands of congressional staffers — have no choice but to use one of the six bridges into the capital. As the seat of the federal government, DC is governed by the Home Rule Act through which Congress banned the imposition of a commuter tax. Specifically, it prohibits “any tax on the whole or any portion of the personal income… of any individual not a resident of the District.” While the city may interpret that as inapplicable to its tolling plan, Congress has thirty days to veto any act of the DC council. As the city notes, however, Virginia has already begun tolling two of the main roCutes into the city on Interstates 66 and 395. Washington hopes to share in the revenue.

DC has already been testing the concept of raising prices dynamically to take advantage of congestion in parking spots. In January, the city issued a report on its pilot project to use congestion pricing on parking meters in Chinatown. Sold to the public as a way to make parking more available and more convenient — using an app to feed the meter — the program proved highly effective at generating revenue. By raising the cost to park at peak periods using electronic parking meters, the city found average rates charged to motorists rose by a third from $2.30 to $3.03.

“For parkDC, however, there was an increase in direct meter revenue of approximately $10,000 per week over the course of the pilot,” the city report concluded. “This well surpassed the monthly operational costs and could have subsidized the initial capital costs.”

FBI: Amazon drivers part of major theft ring

A theft ring in Washington state sold millions of dollars’ worth of stolen goods on Amazon in the past six years, and a pair of contract Amazon delivery drivers was involved, recently unsealed federal court documents show.

According to a search warrant affidavit unsealed in U.S. District Court in Seattle and reviewed by The Associated Press, two storefront businesses posing as pawn shops bought the goods from shoplifters, then had the items shipped to Amazon warehouses, where they were stored until sold online.

Entities associated with the alleged ringleader did at least $10 million in sales on Amazon since 2013, FBI agent Ariana Kroshinsky wrote in her affidavit.

No charges have yet been filed, though investigators have raided the pawn shops and the home of the man identified as the ringleader, Aleksandr Pavlovskiy, 44, of Auburn. A man who answered the door at one of the shops Wednesday identified himself as Alex and told The Associated Press his business was legitimate, that he kept good records and he should not be in any trouble.

Among those who provided stolen items to the pawn shops were two contract Amazon drivers, Kroshinsky said. Their job was to travel to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, pick up items being returned to the company and then bring them to an Amazon warehouse south of Seattle, and to deliver items to post offices for shipping. Instead, they routinely stole the goods and sold them to the pawn shops, she wrote.

Amazon did not immediately return an email seeking comment about the case Thursday.

The investigation began last summer when a police detective in Auburn, a south Seattle suburb, was perusing a record of pawn shop sales and noticed that one man had made 57 transactions. It turned out to be one of the drivers.

He had received nearly $30,000 selling items to the pawn shops between February and July last year, the affidavit said. Police initially arrested the driver, but released him from jail to avoid disrupting their larger investigation.

The other driver, identified as Abbas Zghair, was believed to be a roommate of the first. Amazon told investigators that Zghair stole about $100,000 worth of property, including gaming systems, sporting goods and computer products — items he sold to one of the pawn shops for less than $20,000, the agent wrote.

In an unrelated case, Zghair has been charged with murder after police said he shot and killed a man in an Auburn field in March, then fled to the Canadian border, where he was arrested trying to cross with a fake ID. He’s being held on $2.5 million bail.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-NY) chief of staff and her communications director have announced plans to depart.

The Intercept reported on Friday that Saikat Chakrabarti, the congresswoman’s chief of staff since January, and Corbin Trent, her communications director, would be leaving her congressional office in the next few weeks.

Chakrabarti, who masterminded Ocasio-Cortez’s election to Congress, is heading to New Consensus, a nonprofit working to bolster the Green New Deal and other climate change initiatives.

The congresswoman’s office said in a statement:

Saikat has decided to leave … to work with New Consensus to further develop plans for a Green New Deal. We are extraordinarily grateful for his service to advance a bold agenda … Saikat’s goal has always been to do whatever he can to help the larger progressive movement, and we look forward to continuing working with him to do just that.

Trent, on the other hand, is transitioning to Ocasio-Cortez’s reelection campaign, which has elicited a number of high-profile challengers.

“With the Ocasio 2020 campaign beginning to ramp up, I’ve asked Corbin to transition to the campaign full-time and he has agreed to do so,” Ocasio-Cortez told The Intercept. “I’m looking forward to growing the movement with him in Queens and the Bronx and across the country.”

The shakeup comes as the congresswoman’s office has been engulfed in controversy since Chakrabarti attacked more moderate members of the House majority.

In June, Chakrabarti took to social media to air his frustration with moderate Democrats for forcing Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) to abandon a $4.6 billion emergency border appropriation bill favored by progressives. In a series of tweets, Chakrabarti likened the moderates to old Southern Democrats, many of whom were avowed segregationists.

He stood by the comparison even when a progressive activist noted Rep. Sharice Davids (D-KS), the first openly LGBT Native American woman elected to Congress, was one of the moderates that wavered on the bill.

“I think the point still stands. I don’t think people have to be personally racist to enable a racist system. And the same could even be said of the Southern Democrats,” Chakrabarti said in a now deleted follow-up tweet. “I don’t believe Sharice is a racist person, but her votes are showing her to enable a racist system.”

Although Breitbart News reported on the controversial comments at the time, neither Ocasio-Cortez nor House leadership acknowledged that Chakrabarti may have crossed a line. The situation, though, changed sharply in July when Ocasio-Cortez accused Pelosi of “singling out newly elected women of color.”
