The US military used the south runway while the Frankfurt commercial airport used a north runway up until the 80's (I think). That was the Rhein-Main airbase.

 

Everything moved over to Ramstein. May have had something to do with the Baader-Meinhoff stuff. I think the move was around the time of the Ramstein bombing. (82-83?)

 

So may still be some US stuff southside. I think it's used for freight now, not sure.
