It looks like the camera was outside the car. The backseat likely has a mesh on the rear windows due to the backseat being a cage essentially. Add in window tint and you get a really poor picture. This image was enhanced to bring the subject out better. That is why this image is so crappy.

Such cameras are said to be used to catch shoplifters. Mostly they are to deter such things. All retailers have an expected loss from theft built in to the profit and prices charged. Most stores are able to get a no trespass order on a person and the poor camera is really only a reference.

No. It is taken from outside the car and the tinted window is up. There is also the same cage on both side windows. You can see the reflection from the window. The picture was enhanced to bring out the darkness in the car backseat. That is why it looks so bad.
