Bulgaria Seeks to Purchase US Liquefied Natural Gas, Nuclear Fuel - Joint Statement

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) - Bulgaria is pondering purchasing nuclear fuel and liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States and Washington is going to dispatch a technical team to the Balkan nation to explore such possibilities, US President Donald Trump and Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said in joint statement suggest.

Diversification of energy sources was high on the agenda during the talk given Bulgaria's heavy dependence on Russian supplies.

"We will cooperate on increasing the supply of gas from diverse and reliable sources and diversifying the nuclear energy sector. To this end, the United States intends to send a technical team to Bulgaria to work with Bulgarian counterparts to explore the possibilities for further cooperation in different areas of energy, including nuclear", the joint statement said on Monday.

The statement said that Bulgaria, which is aspiring to become a regional energy transit hub, will take maximum advantage of US LNG for which it also needs the right infrastructure.

"Together, we intend to monitor and work to ensure decisive progress on the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria and the Alexandroupolis Floating Storage and Regasification Unit in Greece", the statement said.

The United States and Bulgaria also promised to work expeditiously on licensing US fuel for the Kozloduy nuclear power plant.

At Least 9 Civilians Killed in US-Led Coalition Air Strike in Afghanistan

KABUL – At least nine civilians were killed overnight in the village of Gajgin in Afghanistan’s Farah province by US-led coalition aircraft, broadcaster 1TV reported on Sunday. At the same time, five other people, including one minor, were severely injured and later sent to the hospital.

RevContent InArticle SOLO

Local authorities confirmed the incident, telling journalists that they had asked the government in Kabul to address the tragedy. In the meantime, there has been no official comment from the coalition forces. The reports come amid another escalation in Afghanistan almost two months after the US President Donald Trump suspended peace talks with the Taliban movement, noting that the negotiations were “dead”.

Taliban and US officials had for nearly a year been attempting to negotiate a peace deal that would ensure the withdrawal of foreign troops; however, the talks resulted in nothing. Following the collapse of the negotiations, the movement vowed to continue its fight against the central government and coalition forces, claiming that it will only stop when foreign troops leave the country.

The American military, in the meantime, is reducing its presence in the Central Asian country, as, according to numerous reports, the US has already reduced its strength in Afghanistan by 2,000 troops over the last year.

Australian Prime Minister Calls Alleged Chinese Spy Plot ‘Deeply Disturbing’

New allegations that the Chinese communist regime attempted to install an agent inside Australia’s federal Parliament are “deeply disturbing and troubling,” Australia’s prime minister said on Nov. 25 as its domestic spy agency investigates the plot.

The probe had already been started by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) before it was first reported by Australia’s “60 Minutes” program and affiliated newspapers on Nov. 24, according to Mike Burgess, ASIO’s director-general of security.

Reports about China’s alleged meddling in Australia’s domestic affairs detailed how a suspected Chinese espionage ring had offered “a seven-figure sum” to Melbourne luxury car dealer Bo “Nick” Zhao to run for a seat in Australia’s federal Parliament. Zhao was found dead in March in a Melbourne motel room and police were unable to conclude how he died.

“I find the allegations deeply disturbing and troubling,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison told reporters in Canberra, adding that the government had bolstered Australia’s laws and security agencies to counter foreign interference.

“Australia is not naive to the threats that it faces more broadly,” he added.

The allegations came just a day after a man claiming to be a Chinese military intelligence agent defected to Australia and presented troves of material to ASIO. In an earlier interview with The Epoch Times, 27-year-old Wang Liqiang described how he had become disillusioned by the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) totalitarian agenda, leading to his defection.

At a news briefing in Beijing on Nov. 25, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang denied reports of meddling in Australia and said the Chinese government won’t interfere in other countries’ domestic affairs. He called the allegations by media reports a lie.

Scrutiny of the CCP and its influence in Australia has been on the rise. Australia passed laws in 2018 to combat foreign interference, which was introduced in the wake of what then-Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull described as “disturbing reports of Chinese influence.”

Jeff Nyquist, an author and researcher of Chinese and Russian strategy, told The Epoch Times the reports about China’s alleged attempts at meddling in Australian politics should come as no surprise.

“Being able to get inside the political system of its enemies, of the countries it wants to subvert, is a key tactic in the bag of tricks of the CCP,” he said. “The threats that China has made, for example, to Australia that they better be on the side of China and not on the side of the United States in any future disagreements are to be taken seriously.”

An article published in Chinese state media threatened Australia over its relationship with the United States.

“This Australia-US alliance will not bring the benefits Australia hopes for. This will bring a long-term military and political confrontation between Australia and Asian countries,” academic Yu Lei wrote in an op-ed in China’s Global Times.

Twitter Blacklists Project Veritas from Running Ads

Twitter has blacklisted the undercover journalism organization Project Veritas, which has previously exposed senior employees at the company admitting to censorship of conservatives, from running ads.

Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe reported that when his organization tried to run an ad to recruit new undercover journalists, it received an email from Twitter saying that the video contained “inappropriate language.”

Ironically, the “inappropriate language” came from one of Twitter’s own employees, Olinda Hassan, who Project Veritas recorded in an undercover video talking about discouraging “shitty people” from using the platform. This clip was featured in the ad.

In his video discussing the ad ban, O’Keefe noted that another clip used in the ad was of a company employee discussing the use of “shadow bans,” or covert suppression of unwelcome content.

“You guessed it, a tweet about Twitter shadow bans is the thing in the hundreds of videos that we’ve done that Twitter is considering the reason why we shouldn’t be approved for Twitter ads.”

“Now remember, this video was used by Ted Cruz in a congressional hearing… It’s in the record of the United States Congress.”

“After all this has unfolded, we get an email from Twitter over the weekend, and the email says … ‘Project Veritas, your account is ineligible to participate in Twitter ads. Twitter has banned Project Veritas from advertising on its platform.”

“This is all going to blow up in their faces. Even more people are going to apply,” said O’Keefe. “These people want to stop us, they want to shut us down — send a message to them. Be brave. Go undercover.”

Breitbart News has reached out to Twitter for comment.

Hundreds Protest Decision Allowing Google to Turn Toronto Neighborhood into a “Smart City”

“Smart Cities” are great for those who collect, analyze and sell residents’ and visitors’ data. Everyone else seems to be getting a bum deal though (see 1, 2, 3).

According to a 2018 Smart Cities Dive article, 66% of Americans don’t want to live in “Smart Cities” because of privacy and cybersecurity concerns. No mention of how many didn’t want to live in them because of 24/7 exposure to biologically harmful radiation from 4G and 5G small cell technology being installed near homes and everywhere else in order to make communities “Smart.”

Thanks to BoingBoing for reporting about what’s been decided for a neighborhood in Toronto apparently without most residents’ knowledge or consent.

At Waterfront Toronto’s first meeting for the public after its board of directors voted Oct. 31 to continue negotiating with Sidewalk Labs on the parameters of a 12-acre surveillance district, officials from the public agency made it clear they’re already wedded to the Google sister company.

The hundreds of attendees of last night’s ‘Public Update on Quayside’ were each given a package that included a copy of an Oct. 29 letter from Waterfront Toronto President and CEO George Zegarac to Sidewalk Labs’s Chief Development Officer Josh Sirefman. Zegarac lays out in the letter how the two bodies will work closely together — with Waterfront Toronto taking the lead in on such things as negotiations with all three levels of government – to “develop an ‘Innovation Plan’ to advance and achieve Waterfront Toronto’s priority outcomes.” Based on this newly arrived at ‘realignment of Master Innovation and Development Plan threshold issues,’ Waterfront Toronto’s final decision on whether to proceed with the plan will be taken by its board by March 31, 2020.

Members of the public who walked into last night’s meeting with a scintilla of hope that Waterfront Toronto officials may still admit it is extremely unwise to bed down with a high-tech giant had that hope dashed. (And it was even further smashed by a November 19 Reuters report quoting key Waterfront Toronto officials as saying they have all the information they need to evaluate Sidewalk Labs’s proposal.)

Among the ‘pearls’ at the November 19 public meeting:

– in response to a question about how Waterfront Toronto can possibly curtail how much information is collected by Sidewalk Labs, Zegarac said they would penalize Sidewalk Labs if it breaches privacy boundaries. Audience member Melissa Goldstein scoffed at the idea of penalties having any effect on Google. Zegarac replied, “I’m just saying what we’re trying to do. Nobody’s outlawed Google from their country. We need to be realistic about what we can do with this project.”

– Meg Davis, Waterfront Toronto’s Chief Development Officer, responded to a question about whether the public can evaluate Sidewalk Labs’s business plans for Quayside by saying Waterfront Toronto isn’t capable of making such an assessment. “Sidewalk Labs is a private company, so I don’t know how we would technically evaluate those business models for them,” Davis said with a straight face.

– another audience member asked when Waterfront Toronto will file documents to respond to a lawsuit by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association — which the group filed in April 2019, challenging the jurisdiction of Waterfront Toronto in entering such a complex agreement with Sidewalk Labs, and asserting such an agreement violates residents’ Charter rights to privacy, liberty and free association — and which is continuing. Zegarac replied, “You know what? We’re kind of removed on this one because this is before the courts, so I don’t want to get into any details, but we are responding to that, so I’ll just leave it at that.” Zegarac’s response is classic official obfuscation: the truth is that Waterfront Toronto has not yet filed any documents. Instead, Waterfront Toronto’s lawyers, whose high bills are footed by taxpayers, are busy keeping the case out of court.

Toshiba says its device tests for 13 cancer types with 99% accuracy from a single drop of blood

Toshiba Corp. has developed technology to detect 13 types of cancer from a single drop of blood with 99 percent accuracy, the company announced Monday.

Toshiba developed the diagnosis method together with the National Cancer Center Research Institute and Tokyo Medical University, and hopes to commercialize it in “several years” after starting a trial next year.

The method could be used to treat cancer in its early stage, it said.

The method is designed to examine the types and concentration of microRNA molecules secreted in blood from cancer cells. Toray Industries Inc. and other companies have also developed technologies to diagnose cancer using microRNA molecules from a blood sample.

“Compared to other companies’ methods, we have an edge in the degree of accuracy in cancer detection, the time required for detection and the cost,” Koji Hashimoto, chief research scientist at Toshiba’s Frontier Research Laboratory, told a press briefing.

The California DMV Is Making $50M a Year Selling Drivers’ Personal Information

The California Department of Motor Vehicles is generating revenue of $50,000,000 a year through selling drivers’ personal information, according to a DMV document obtained by Motherboard.

DMVs across the country are selling data that drivers are required to provide to the organization in order to obtain a license. This information includes names, physical addresses, and car registration information. California’s sales come from a state which generally scrutinizes privacy to a higher degree than the rest of the country.

In a public record acts request, Motherboard asked the California DMV for the total dollar amounts paid by commercial requesters of data for the past six years. The responsive document shows the total revenue in financial year 2013/14 as $41,562,735, before steadily climbing to $52,048,236 in the financial year 2017/18.

The document doesn’t name the commercial requesters, but some specific companies appeared frequently in Motherboard’s earlier investigation that looked at DMVs across the country. They included data broker LexisNexis and consumer credit reporting agency Experian. Motherboard also found DMVs sold information to private investigators, including those who are hired to find out if a spouse is cheating. It is unclear if the California DMV has recently sold data to these sorts of entities.

In an email to Motherboard, the California DMV said that requesters may also include insurance companies, vehicle manufacturers, and prospective employers.

Asked if the sale of this data was essential to the DMV, Marty Greenstein, public information officer at the California DMV, wrote that its sale furthers objectives related to highway and public safety, “including availability of insurance, risk assessment, vehicle safety recalls, traffic studies, emissions research, background checks, and for pre- and existing employment purposes.”
