All I have to do is come here to realize how much I lost when I lost the ability to understand German. My teacher and my best friend both spoke fluent German and we would converse … but he died, I went on to other grades / other schools and 6th grade was SOOO long ago. By the time I met someone else who spoke German natively, it was too late.

I'd really like to know what you are discussing (some of the memes look familiar, so I can guess the topics) because, while our governments differ greatly, our people differ but little.
