Gu is best known for performing the first successful human fetal heart and kidney transplants in immunocompromised rats.[5]The heart and kidneys not only survived but grew larger in size and could function to support the life of the host animal.[6] This may have important implications for the treatment of hypoplastic left heart syndrome, bilateral renal agenesis, and other congenital diseases of the heart and kidney.[7]

March 30, 2016, Gu, in his role as CEO of Ganogen, was subpoenaed by the United States House Select Investigative Panel on Planned Parenthood that was created in response to the Planned Parenthood 2015 undercover videos controversy, to testify about his research involving human fetal tissue.[10][11][12][13][14] Gu has since spoken out about what he perceives to be the unfair treatment and intimidation of researchers and physicians by the panel, which included the panel releasing the names, addresses, and contact information of people who work with fetal tissue.[15][16][17] Gu was recognized by the Union of Concerned Scientists for his response to the panel investigation and criticism from pro-life activists.[18]
