The Case of Dr. Eugene Gu and Vanderbilt University Medical Center

https:// academeblog.org/2018/01/16/the-case-of-dr-eugene-gu-and-vanderbilt-university-medical-center/

Dr. Eugene Gu is a surgical resident at Vanderbilt University whose research seeks to transplant healthy fetal organs in utero to fetuses with fatal congenital diseases so they can survive to adulthood with fully functioning hearts and kidneys. In April 2016 Gu received a congressional subpoena from the House of Representatives’ Select Investigative Panel on Infants’ Lives, led by Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN). Gu’s start-up research company, Ganogen, is one of more than thirty organizations under investigation by House Republicans over the alleged use of fetal tissue from abortion clinics. A spokesperson for the House panel said the goal of the investigation was to “protect the integrity of research, scientific advancements, and voluntary organ donation in America.” But Gu said the negative attention from Congress created a “harrowing” ordeal for him. Fellow surgical residents at Vanderbilt became suspicious of him.

Mark Zuckerberg, Sheryl Sandberg reportedly no-shows at Facebook meet

The CEO and COO reportedly didn't attend a staff meeting about the social network's relationship with Cambridge Analytica.

Where in the world is Mark Zuckerberg?

Facebook's CEO and co-founder was noticeably absent Tuesday from a company briefing at which employees were given the opportunity to ask questions about the social network's relationship with Cambridge Analytica, according to The Daily Beast.

Zuckerberg wasn't the only Facebook executive to keep a low-profile, according to The Daily Beast, which reported COO Sheryl Sandberg also was a no-show for the meeting. Instead, the internal gathering was run by Paul Grewal, a Facebook lawyer.

The social network's relationship with Cambridge Analytica has become the focus of controversy in the wake of reports the voter-profiling firm used data from 50 million Facebook accounts while working for the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election. The data had initially been collected by a researcher who than transferred it to Cambridge Analytica in violation of Facebook policies.

A Facebook spokeswoman said she didn't "have anything to share" about the meeting.
