World War Zero

Led by John Kerry, the former senator and secretary of state, a bipartisan coalition of world leaders, Hollywood celebrities and military officers have been brought together to encourage public action on climate change.

The 60 founding members include former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter (who as of this writing had been readmitted to the hospital … wishing him well); Arnold Schwarzenegger; John Kasich, former governor of Ohio, and a Republican who would’ve had my vote without me having to hold my nose. Entertainers Ashton Kutcher, Leonardo DiCaprio and Sting round out the group.

Their goal is to hold “more than 10 million climate conversations in the coming year with Americans across the political spectrum.” The coalition’s name, World War Zero, was created to portray not only the security threat posed by Earth’s warming, but the wartime like mobilization Kerry said would be needed to stop the rise in carbon emissions.

Here’s where we disagree — by 2050. I’m banking on the climate report issued by over 300 United Nations climate scientists which stated, unequivocally, that a 12-year window is in place for the significant reduction of carbon emissions, or, whatever we do after that … simply won’t matter. In other words, the point of no return.

So, 2030 is the target year — at least it’s the one to which I’m adhering.
