I think that Wray will be replaced now out of necessity to help reinstate trust in the institution of the FBI. Without trust, the whole justice system could be incapacitated by previous cases being challenged in courts.
It seems that Wray has completed his job. Don't forget the groundwork that was done by him and Sessions in the beginning. I remember reading that Wray had visited all 56 FBI field offices, and thinking that most likely everyone was being reminded of the importance of maintaining integrity. (No sauce on what he said to them, just my thoughts. Could be I'm full of shit.)

Bottom line, we may never get an answer as to whether he was a black hat or white hat, but my bet would be white.
