Yep.
Mining colonies on the Moon is Step One.
From there we move on to Mars, where we also build mining colonies, and we terraform an area in the great rift valley which we can cover with a transparent roof.
And then, from there, we travel to the asteroid belt, hook up to a few good asteroids, and drag them to Martian orbits. At least one will be ice, which will be used to bombard an area where it can be recovered on the ground, possibly a pole area or a sandy desert where the ice chunks will be buried in sand.
And then, we build a permanent space station residence in the Asteroid Belt where people can raise families. That is where materials will be mined to build the first generational starships that will travel to other star systems with potentially habitable planets.
If a starship arrives and the planet is not habitable, they will try to continue indefinitely in a zone where the sunlight can be leveraged to support life longer term. If there is no asteroids then small moons can be exploited, and even comets captured. They will either succeed in surviving until help arrives, or what they leave behind, will be additional resources for the next ship.
Whatever way it happens, human beings are going to learn how to live off-planet, and will travel to other star systems.
Note that one potential design for a generational starship is to hollow out an asteroid, attach engines, and fly that thing to the stars.
Human beings thrive on adventure and calculated risk. Where We Go One, We Go All or in other words, wherever human beings go to, the human race goes there to. The risks and dangers endured by a few space travellers will benefit all of humanity.
Did you know that the Death Star weapon from Star Wars is real, and is out there today and could fire at any moment? If a star collapses into a blackhole, it sends out a beam of energy in one direction, and if a planet happens to be in the path. it will be destroyed. Although the risk of it hitting earth is extremely tiny, it is simply not acceptable. We need at least two more planets to avoid even the risk that a beam of energy is lined up and destroys two in a row.
Remember, the Death Star is in our imagination and in our dreams. That means it is real. That means that humans will see this play out somewhere, somewhen. That part is guaranteed 100% probability. That is the warning from God. Our job is to be all that we can be, and build a better life somewhere, somewhen.
The best is yet to come
