One is senior to a junior, example, implies pecking order intrinsic and VERY suggests wide range within such comparison.

Example, think ancient Rome. Centurion (commanded 100) amongst 60 of same rank (formed a Legion) and so forth. Does one rise in rank on merit, favor, or death/fall of senior(s)?
