Exit Poll Projects Strong Majority for Boris Johnson

By Max Colchester and Jason Douglas

Updated Dec. 12, 2019 5:38 pm ET

LONDON—An early exit poll suggests British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to win a large majority in Thursday’s general election, an outcome that would mark a stunning victory for the Brexit cheerleader and pave the way for the U.K. Parliament to trigger a long-awaited split with the European Union.

The exit poll commissioned by three national broadcasters, released just after polling stations closed Thursday, said Mr. Johnson’s Conservative Party was on track to win 368 seats in Britain’s 650-seat House of Commons. The main opposition Labour Party was forecast to win 191, with smaller parties taking the rest.

The poll asks tens of thousands people how they voted and has correctly forecast the outcome of two out of the last three elections. Its organizers say they should be able to predict the seats won by each of the main parties to within 10 or 15 seats.

Boris Johnson on course for huge win in UK election, exit poll suggests

Boris Johnson's election gamble appears to have paid off.

Brexit seemed to be firmly back on track Thursday after an initial exit poll suggested his Conservative Party was on course to secure a large majority – 86 seats – in the House of Commons.

The exit poll, conducted for the UK's main broadcasters, predicted the Conservatives would win 368 seats, well ahead of Labour's 191. The Scottish National Party is projected to win 55 seats, with the Liberal Democrats securing 13.

Reacting to the exit polls, Johnson thanked the Conservative Party's voters, candidates and volunteers. "We live in the greatest democracy in the world," he tweeted.

If confirmed by the official counts in the next few hours, those numbers represent the best results for the Conservatives since Margaret Thatcher's win in 1987 – and the worst Labour result in more than 80 years.

If Labour's poor showing at the ballot box is confirmed, Jeremy Corbyn's future as the leader of the party will likely be questioned.

Voters appear to have given Conservatives in UK a strong majority

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Conservative Party appeared to be on course for a solid majority in the British Parliament in the general election on Thursday, according to an exit poll, a victory that would pave the way for Britain’s exit from the European Union in less than two months.

For the prime minister, whose brief tenure has been marked by legal reversals, scorched-earth politics and unrelenting chaos, it would be an extraordinary vindication. Defying predictions that he would be tossed out of his job, Mr. Johnson now seems likely to lead Britain through its most momentous transition since World War II.

According to the exit poll, the Conservatives are projected to win 368 seats in the House of Commons, versus 191 for the Labour Party. That would give the Conservatives an 86-seat majority, enough to empower Mr. Johnson to pull Britain out of the bloc at the end of January, as he had promised.
