I always thought that crude was this thick fluid, difficult to ignite. I used to work for Conrail. It seems odd that so many of the tank cars would rupture, even if they were single-walled. Derailments on the main lines are extremely rare. Usually derailments are slow motion things that happen in the yards due to split switches or on old sidings due to tie rot. Most main line is relatively new welded rail with fresh ties.

 

Just seems odd to dump 19 cars before coming to a halt.

Well, the linen looks fresh and the room seems well-lit, ventilated and spacious – a couple framed photos and maybe an area rug and the place would look downright cozy.

On the other hand, the rail was there first. THEN the cities built up around it. So maybe the problem is that the cities are too close to the rail?
