U.K. exit poll shows Boris Johnson's Conservative Party with a clear majority of parliamentary seats as vote count begins

LONDON — Prime Minister Boris Johnson appears to have won a sweeping, decisive and powerful majority of parliamentary seats in Thursday's election, according to the respected national exit poll released minutes after the voting ended.

Conservative Party is expected to win 368 spots in a 650-seat Parliament, according to the exit poll. The party needs 322 seats to control the House of Commons — and then full speed ahead with Brexit.

If the poll results hold when actual ballots are tallied overnight, Johnson and his Conservative Party will have achieved a smashing success, the largest win for the Tories since the days of Margaret Thatcher — while the opposition Labour Party and its hard-left leader Jeremy Corbyn will have suffered their worst defeat in four decades.

It is possible now that if Johnson serves a full five-year term, the Conservative will be in power from 2010 until 2024.

Boris Johnson on course for huge win in UK election, exit poll suggests

Boris Johnson's election gamble appears to have paid off.

Brexit seemed to be firmly back on track Thursday after an initial exit poll suggested his Conservative Party was on course to secure a large majority – 86 seats – in the House of Commons.

The exit poll, conducted for the UK's main broadcasters, predicted the Conservatives would win 368 seats, well ahead of Labour's 191. The Scottish National Party is projected to win 55 seats, with the Liberal Democrats securing 13.

Reacting to the exit polls, Johnson thanked the Conservative Party's voters, candidates and volunteers. "We live in the greatest democracy in the world," he tweeted.

If confirmed by the official counts in the next few hours, those numbers represent the best results for the Conservatives since Margaret Thatcher's win in 1987 – and the worst Labour result in more than 80 years.

If Labour's poor showing at the ballot box is confirmed, Jeremy Corbyn's future as the leader of the party will likely be questioned.

LONDON—An early exit poll suggests British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to win a large majority in Thursday’s general election, an outcome that would mark a stunning victory for the Brexit cheerleader and pave the way for the U.K. Parliament to trigger a long-awaited split with the European Union.

The exit poll commissioned by three national broadcasters, released just after polling stations closed Thursday, said Mr. Johnson’s Conservative Party was on track to win 368 seats in Britain’s 650-seat House of Commons. The main opposition Labour Party was forecast to win 191, with smaller parties taking the rest.

The poll asks tens of thousands people how they voted and has correctly forecast the outcome of two out of the last three elections. Its organizers say they should be able to predict the seats won by each of the main parties to within 10 or 15 seats.
