On December 13, 2008, junk scientist Al Gore predicted the North Polar Ice Cap would be completely ice free in five years.

Gore made the prediction to a German audience on December 13, 2008. Al warned them that “the entire North ‘polarized’ cap will disappear in 5 years.”

“Five Years”

This wasn’t the only time Al Gore made his ice-free prediction. Gore had been predicting dire scenario since 2007. That means that the North Pole should have melted completely six years ago today.

Junk scientist Al Gore also made the same prediction in 2009.

In January 2006, Al Gore pushed the theory that “within the next 10 years, the world will reach a point of no return” and “a true planetary emergency” due to global warming.

'Calm down & fix your attitude!’ Chinese FM says US worldview has become dangerously irrational

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi urged his American counterparts to “calm down” and adopt a “rational” approach to diplomacy with Beijing, amid efforts to resolve the ongoing trade row between the two countries.

Wang took aim at the US’ policies at an event in Beijing on Friday, stating they have only served to damage “hard-won trust” and “vilify” China, calling on Washington to “correct its worldview.”

“Deep-seated issues” continue to challenge the US-China relationship that must be addressed, Wang said, adding that the American outlook toward both China and the world has gone “astray.”

American lawmakers have passed a number of bills targeting China in recent months, including a Hong Kong “human rights and democracy” act, as well as a bill condemning alleged rights abuses in China’s Xinjiang Province, both of which threaten to impose sanctions on Beijing. Chinese officials responded harshly to both acts, slamming them as attempts to meddle in China’s internal affairs.

As the two sides work to resolve a trade spat that has seen billions in tariffs slapped on goods from both countries, media reports on Thursday said US President Donald Trump had approved a “phase one” deal with Beijing to hold off a new round of American levies set to take effect later this week, but the White House has yet to confirm the sign-off.

Hunter Biden got off easy on drug charges while Joe pushed for harsh sentences as a senator during war on drugs

That doesn't seem right

In the 1980s, Joe Biden was a senator pushing for War on Drugs policies that severely punished drug offenders, often and especially minorities. During that same period, his son Hunter was arrested on drug charges — and ultimately faced no consequences, according to the Washington Examiner.

Hunter was arrested in 1988 in New Jersey for possession of a controlled substance. Instead of going through the typical legal process for such charges, he was allowed to participate in a pre-trial intervention program, and the charge was expunged from his record.

That experience with his son did not seem to alter Joe Biden's perspective on drug offenders, as he voted for mandatory minimum sentences for first time crack cocaine offenders just months afterward. The Examiner's Alana Goodman and Joseph Simonson report:

Five months after his son escaped a sentence and had his possession charge kept secret, Biden voted for the Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1988, which made crack cocaine, often used by poor, black offenders, the only drug with a mandatory minimum penalty for a first offense of simple possession.

But while many minorities were imprisoned for minor drug offenses, the wealthy, white Hunter Biden was allowed to participate in a state diversionary program called pretrial intervention. The program allowed first offenders to "avoid a trial and having the stigma accompanying a guilty verdict," according to the Rubinstein Law Firm in New Jersey.

The next year, Biden emphasized the need for holding drug dealers accountable in a 1989 speech responding to then-President George H.W. Bush.

"We have to hold every drug user accountable," Biden said. "If there were no drug users, there would be no appetite for drugs and there would be no market for them."

Cop Arrested on 44 Charges for Raping Women, Groping Kids, Sodomizing Man to Look for Weed

Chattanooga, TN — Over the years, the Free Thought Project has reported on some utterly bizarre behavior from law enforcement. From judges stealing women’s underwear to police officers offering homeless people sht sandwiches, this behavior never ceases to amaze and infuriate. Adding to this long list of “weird sht cops do” was a story out of Chattanooga, in which a police officer stripped to his underwear and “baptized” a woman he was arresting for having a marijuana roach. After this story garnered him national attention, an investigation was launched and Hamilton County Deputy Daniel Wilkey was arrested this week and has been charged with more than 40 counts ranging from rape and sexual battery to oppression and extortion.

The Tennessean reports that Wilkey, 26, was indicted on 44 charges stemming from allegations of inappropriate behavior and assault while he was working for the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Wilkey has been named, along with other HCSO deputies, in four lawsuits that accuse him of misconduct during traffic stops. The alleged misconduct ranges from a forced baptism, groping underage girls and an illegal, forcible drug search, AP reports.

Shandle Marie Riley announced in October that she was suing Hamilton County government and two Hamilton County Sheriff’s deputies after she claims one of them stripped down to his underwear and forced her into Soddy Lake where he “baptized” her. Deputies Daniel Wilkey and Jacob Goforth are both named in the lawsuit.

According to Riley, the incident happened in February as she was driving to a friends house where her child was staying. Riley was then pulled over by the two apparently insane deputies who accused her of having methamphetamine. She had none.

Riley was then forced out of the vehicle by the deputies who then searched her car without consent, the lawsuit states. According to the lawsuit, Wilkey then asked Riley to “reach under her shirt and pull out her bra and shake the bra and shirt.” Riley says she asked if a female officer could be present for the search, to which Wilkey replied “the law did not require” it.

The officers then asked Riley if she had anything illegal and she told them she had a marijuana roach in her pack of cigarettes. The horror. Upon hearing this, according to the lawsuit, Wilkey “insulted the plaintiff,” calling her a “piece of s—,” saying she was lying about not having other drugs. But the lawsuit says Wilkey found nothing other than the “roach,” reports News Channel 9.

After calling her a piece of sh*t and humiliating her, Wilkey then asked Riley if she was “saved” and if she believed in Jesus Christ. According to Riley, she responded that she believed in Jesus Christ but was not “saved” by her own choice.

Wilkey then told Riley that “God was talking to him during the vehicle search, and [he] felt the Lord wanted him to baptize the plaintiff.,” and said that he felt “the spirit,” according to the lawsuit.

Irish nationalists win more seats than pro-British unionists in Northern Ireland FOR FIRST TIME EVER

Voters in Northern Ireland have elected more Irish nationalists than pro-British unionists to the UK parliament in the 2019 general election for the first time; all 18 seats are now decided.

Sinn Féin, the largest nationalist party, held on to its seven seats with the fellow pro-Irish Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) winning two seats, combining to overtake the Democratic Unionist Party who lost two, leaving them with just eight seats.

The cross-community Alliance Party, which has moved to a position of neutrality on the union won the final constituency, meaning anti-Brexit MPs now form the majority in Northern Ireland.

It’s the first time in Northern Ireland’s history, since the partition of the island of Ireland in 1921, that Irish nationalists outnumber pro-British unionists in the UK parliament. It could lead to more calls for a vote on Irish reunification, with British PM Boris Johnson winning a massive majority across the union.

Sinn Féin see Johnson’s Brexit as an opportunity to further the case for a United Ireland, if as expected, Northern Ireland is taken out of the EU next year. The Northern Ireland secretary can call a referendum if they believe there is a majority in favour of reunification.

A poll carried out by Lord Ashcroft in September showed that there was a slim majority in favour of a united Ireland among people in Northern Ireland.

46 percent stated that they would choose to leave the union and join the Republic of Ireland, while 45 percent said that they’d vote to stay in the UK in a referendum on unification.

It capped a poor night for the DUP, who, despite remaining the largest Northern Irish party, lost their MP for North Belfast. The party’s deputy leader Nigel Dodds was defeated by Sinn Féin’s John Finucane in the constituency.

Dodds’s party colleague Edwin Poots claimed his defeat was very damaging for unionism. “Ultimately, if we are going to protect the union, enhance the union and secure the union, then we’re going to have to have people voting unionist,” Poots told BBC Northern Ireland.

Central Banks Alarming Moves Towards Social Engineering

Signs have begun to appear on the horizon that in the future they will attempt to expand their power by increasing their role in social engineering. This is a term that refers to efforts to influence particular attitudes and social behaviors on a large scale. Its goal is to produce or change certain desired social characteristics in a population. In the past, this has been more the role of governments with the consent of the people often through laws and tax policies.

In America, the Fed was initially given the mandate to create a stable monetary environment. Since that time it has been expanded into what is now known collectively as the "dual mandate." Now its two goals also include achieving maximum sustainable employment in conjunction with price stability. The Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), which sets U.S. monetary policy, has translated these mandates in rather broad terms.

In the last few weeks, Christine Lagarde, the new head of the ECB, said something that shocked many people. She stated,

"We should be happier to have a job than to have our savings protected… I think that it is in this spirit that monetary policy has been decided by my predecessors and I think they made quite a beneficial choice."

If this is true we are in big trouble. It is a sign that something is terribly wrong, the idea that you can have a job but you can’t save anything, places workers in a position of servitude where they are dependent on, at the total mercy of the economy and the government.

Sweden: Police in multicultural Malmo deploy anti-crime drones

In response to the growing crime problem and too few police officers, the city of Malmö, Sweden has deployed camera-equipped drones to surveil the city at all times.

In a press release, Malmö police say that the drones will be used around the clock in public spaces, especially those where drug traffickers frequent such as Söderkulla, Oxie, Kirseberg, and Hermodsdal, Aftonbladet reports.

“The work with UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) can take place around the clock in public places, especially at city centers and where drugs are traded. The purpose is crime prevention and security,” the police press release reads.

The announcement to deploy the drones comes as a part of ‘Operation Rimfrost’ – a six-month program aimed at fighting gang activity.

“We will use UAS with cameras when the need so requires in the coming months. They are a good complement to foot patrolling and other safety-creating measures that we do,” said Michael Mattsson, Deputy Head of Command for Operating Rimfrost in the southern region.

“They will help us prevent and stop crime,” he added.

In the past year, the level of crime and violence in Sweden and especially in multicultural Malmö has surged.

Days ago, two people were shot dead outside a nightclub in central Norrköping in what’s believed to have been a gang-related incident.

Earlier this year in October, Swedish police released statistics which revealed that the number of incidents that involved bombs and explosives between January of July of 2019 had increased by 45 percent compared to the same period in 2018.

Let’s look at a few of Chairman Powel’s words at yesterday’s press conference. Please read them and tell me whether this sounds to you like a man who doesn’t understand what he’s doing. Or if you think he’s deliberately pulling words out of his ass, stringing them together, and spewing them from his mouth in an effort to gaslight the investing public.

I’ll take the latter. The Fed is in the propaganda business. It knows what it is doing. Double talk, lies, and utter bullshit are its stock-in-trade.

Powell’s spew was in response to a question from the confused but affable Michael Mckee of Bloomberg, who no doubt served up the question on a suggestion from his Fed handlers.

McKee: The BIS concluded in September that the repo spike was not a one off confluence of random events but reflected structural and regulatory issues that could lead to a recurrence.

This is the utter nonsense that the Fed and Primary Dealers who own Wall Street want you to believe. The fact is that the dealers and banks could no longer continue to help finance the burgeoning Federal debt. They had reached the end of their willingness, and/or their ability, to continue to use repo funding from each other to fund the growing flood of Treasury issuance.

McKee: I’d like to ask you if you agree with the BIS findings and given that we are approaching year-end for the markets will you be taking any extra steps to ensure that funding is available in the repo and FX swaps markets.

There was a report yesterday, Credit Suisse suggesting there’s a good chance that we will see disruptions and one of the reasons they December 11, 2019 put it forward is that the Fed is at this point buying only T-bills and the market wants to sell coupons, do you have any plans to sell coupons?

I believe that McKee meant to ask if the Fed has any plans to buy coupons, not sell them. But his question was almost as nonsensical as Powell’s response, so it’s hard to know what he meant.

But there’s no mistaking what Powell meant. Gaslight garbage. I’ll try to explain why as we go through this.

I put Powell’s stream of BS into paragraphs, in an attempt to make some sense of it. I have bolded statements that I felt were particularly absurd or critical. And I have interjected a few facts between Powell’s horseshit, to help you make sense of it.

Powell: So, I’m going to take a little step back and I will get to your specific questions on the year-end and on T-bills.

So I guess I want to start by stressing that these are very important operational matters, but that are not likely to have any macroeconomic implications.

The Fed is pumping $145 billion per month into the system. That’s more than under QE One. Powell has said that it’s Not QE, and now says that it won’t have macroeconomic effects. Oh please. Humor me.

Powell: We’ve decided back in January to remain in an ample reserves regime…

The obvious question here is, “Why?” And the answer is that if they hadn’t reversed course from shrinking their balance sheet, the stock and bond markets would have crashed, and short term rates would have soared.

The comprehensive election defeat of Britain’s left-wing Labour Party has been hailed in Israel as a “milestone in the fight against hatred” after its leadership was accused of years of tepid inaction against antisemitism in its ranks.

The centre said: “No-one has done more to mainstream antisemitism into the political and social life of a democracy than the Jeremy Corbyn-led Labour Party.”

It added: “Members and staff who have dared to speak out against the hate were purged, but not those who declared ‘Heil Hitler’ and ‘F*** the Jews’.”

Republican Group Hits Donald Trump With Scathing New Billboard Campaign

A conservative group is targeting House Republicans with a digital billboard campaign that is heavily critical of President Donald Trump.

In the new ads, Republicans for the Rule of Law calls out Trump for prohibiting key witnesses in the Ukraine scandal from testifying in the House impeachment inquiry against him.

The ads show Trump with a finger over his mouth to indicate that he wants silence. He appears next to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, former National Security Adviser John Bolton, acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney and Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, in the images.

All apart from Trump have tape placed over their mouths to keep them from speaking.

“What Is Trump Hiding?” ask the ads, which will be placed in the congressional districts of House Republicans, including Reps. Greg Walden (Ore.), Mac Thornberry (Texas), Fred Upton (Mich.) Brian Fitzpatrick (Penn.), Adam Kinzinger (Ill.) John Katko (N.Y.) and Martha Roby (Ala.).

House Democrats unveiled two articles of impeachment against Trump on Tuesday. Trump is accused of abuse of power in relation to his alleged pressuring of Ukraine’s president to investigate potential 2020 Democratic rival Joe Biden, and obstruction of Congress, following his administration’s stonewalling of the congressional probe into the initial allegation.

“The president doesn’t own the government and he’s not above the law,” Republicans for the Rule of Law spokesperson Chris Truax said in a statement to HuffPost. “He’s merely a caretaker acting on our behalf and when Congress demands an accounting, it’s the President’s duty to comply.”

“President Trump has been given every opportunity to answer the charges against him,” the statement continued. “He demands friendly witnesses, yet refuses to allow his most loyal supporters to testify. He complains the proceedings are unfair, yet refuses to allow his lawyers to participate in the hearings.”

“If President Trump really could prove he is innocent of the impeachment charges against him, he would have made some effort to do so by now,” Truax concluded. “If the President really does think the facts will exonerate him, why won’t he let those facts come out?”

Last month, Republicans for the Rule of Law launched an ad campaign on Fox News in a bid to educate GOP voters on the facts of the Ukraine scandal.

Planned Parenthood has Plans of Opening “Reproductive Centers” at 50 Los Angeles High Schools

Pro-abortion organization Planned Parenthood is opening up 50 clinics in Los Angeles County high schools.

The Washington Post reported that the program was announced on Wednesday, December 11, 2019. This program was launched in partnership with the school district and Los Angeles County health department and is believed to be the boldest effort in America to bring birth control services to “at-risk students” in public schools.

Planned Parenthood’s program received an initial investment of $10 million from Los Angeles County. Planned Parenthood has also ponied up $6 million to see this program through which consists of multiple birth control options, testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, and pregnancy counseling for approximately 75,000 teens. Allegedly, this program will not offer abortion services.

In addition, this program will train hundreds of teens to be “peer advocates” in order to give out information about safe sex and relationships.

“Teens listen to other teens,” said Jennifer Rivera, a 23-year-old Planned Parenthood staffer who will be in charge of the training.

California has taken a leading role in championing liberal abortion policies during the Trump era, a time when many pro-abortion activists believe they are under constant assault.

Back in October, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law making it the first state to mandate that its public colleges and universities to offer abortion medication.

Social conservatives and religious groups have frequently criticized Planned Parenthood’s involvement in sex education.

Grove Middle School in California canceled a visit from Planned Parenthood educators back in April after a mother had a Christian legal-group step into this matter. A few months ago in Minnesota, Planned Parenthood’s backing of a comprehensive sex education bill was met with criticism from Students for Life. They said, “All of this is really just an opportunity for Planned Parenthood to force their way into schools and sell more abortions.”

In Los Angeles, Sister Paula Vandegaer, who heads Volunteers for Life, said she is against the Planned Parenthood initiative because it “pushes sexuality beyond where they should without reference to families.”

“I am against them being in the schools,” she stated. “They all have school nurses, and there’s no need for Planned Parenthood to co-opt the normal program for health in the school.”

Planned Parenthood is exploiting America’s increasingly politicized education system to propagate their anti-life agenda and push sexual deviancy in public institutions.

Female Groups Blast Jesse Watters For Saying Some Women Journalists Sleep With Sources In Response To ‘Richard Jewell’ Controversy

Fox News host Jesse Watters of “The Five” has come under fire from feminists after he suggested that some women journalists will trade sex for news stories in response to the backlash against Clint Eastwood’s “Richard Jewell.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter (THR), the controversy erupted on Wednesday when Watters said that women journalists sleep with sources “all the time.” His comments were in reference to the outrage directed at “Richard Jewell” for portraying Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) reporter Kathy Scruggs as a callous schemer trading sex with an FBI agent for a scoop, which AJC has condemned as “false and malicious.” Both Warner Bros. and Clint Eastwood have stood by the film’s artistic license.

“It happens, a lot. Ali Watkins was a reporter for many, many years, at many distinguished publications,” said Watters. “She slept with one of her sources, allegedly, for four years and broke a lot of scoops, according to this Politico report here. So, it happens a lot, and it happens a lot in movies and TV shows.”

When co-host Juan Williams challenged that assertion, Watters quickly added that he did not mean “most women reporters.”

“I don’t say most women reporters,” he said. “Male reporters could do it, too. I’m just saying it happens. I’m saying it’s happened many times in the past.”

In response to Watters’ comments, groups representing female journalists have been denouncing his statements as sexist. Elisa Lees Munoz, executive director of the International Women’s Media Foundation, told THR that his comments were “totally beyond the pale.”

“It’s such a trope, it’s so tired, and why is it coming out now?” said Munoz. “I don’t think it’s any different than any other way that professional women are maligned in any profession, which is that a women can’t possibly do her job well if she’s not also using her body to get ahead.”

“I think it has to do with being fed up with journalists being portrayed as anything other than as professional and it has to do with the #MeToo movement and female journalists pushing back on these portrayals,” she continued. “In general, there’s much more awareness of how detrimental these kind of comments are and really an attempt to educate individuals.”

Carolyn McGourty Supple, co-founder of Press Forward, said that Watters promoted a harmful stereotype. “I think it’s an incredibly harmful stereotype and it was irresponsible to say on air,” she said. “It sounded anecdotal and not based in reality. Saying stuff like that has very harmful effects. In reality, women journalists are more likely to be sexually harassed by their sources and face verbal abuse and threats online. This is what drives female journalists around the world to leave the field when they are already underrepresented in the press.”

Tema L. Staig, executive director of the group Women in Media, called Watters a “gaslighting gasbag” while Julie Roginsky, a Democratic strategist who sued Fox News for sexual harassment in 2017 after serving as a contributor, denounced the comments as being “absolutely disgraceful.”

“This statement is absolutely disgraceful,” said Roginsky. “Of course, in his mind, female journalists must resort to feminine wiles to get the scoop, because it can’t be possible that women can actually break stories because of their tenacity and brain power. There is a profound cultural shift that is happening in the United States today, where women won’t stand for that kind of rhetoric any longer. I’m only sorry that this movement seems to have escaped the notice of some people at 1211 Avenue of the Americas.”

Christians in the Gaza Strip will not be allowed to visit holy cities such as Bethlehem and Jerusalem to celebrate Christmas this year, Israeli authorities said on Thursday, Reuters reports.

Gazan Christians will be granted permits to travel abroad but none will be allowed to go to Israel and the occupied West Bank, home to many sites holy to Christians, a spokeswoman for Israel’s military liaison to the Palestinians said.

Israel tightly restricts movements out of the Gaza Strip, territory controlled by Hamas, an Islamist group that it considers a terrorist organization.

The spokeswoman said that following “security orders”, Gazans would be allowed to travel abroad via Israel’s Allenby Bridge border crossing with Jordan but not to visit cities in Israel or the West Bank.

Gaza has only around 1,000 Christians – most of them Greek Orthodox – among a population of 2 million in the narrow coastal strip.

This year’s decision is a break with usual policy. Last year, Israel granted permits for close to 700 Gazan Christians to travel to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth and other holy cities that draw thousands of pilgrims each holiday season.

Gisha, an Israeli rights group, said the ban points “to the intensifying of access restrictions between the two parts of the Palestinian territory,” calling it “a deepening of Israel’s separation policy” for the West Bank and Gaza.

The Palestinians seek to set up a state in the West Bank and Gaza, territory Israel captured in the 1967 Middle East war.

Israel in the past has defended its restrictions on Gazans traveling to the West Bank, saying many Palestinians from Gaza stay on illegally when granted short-term permits.

In Gaza, one Christian woman voiced hope Israel would reverse its policy so she could visit her family in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

“Every year I pray they will give me a permit so I can celebrate Christmas and see my family,” Randa El-Amash, 50, said, adding: “It will be more joyful to celebrate in Bethlehem and in Jerusalem.”

Christian leaders in Jerusalem condemned the move, but added that they are appealing to Israeli authorities to reverse the decision.

“Other people around the world are allowed to travel to Bethlehem. We think Gaza’s Christians should have that right, too,” said Wadie Abu Nassar, an adviser to local church leaders.

Almost 300,000 people in Moscow evacuated in past two weeks over bomb scare wave

Pentagon Pushes Back on Report that Military Lied About Progress in Afghanistan

The Pentagon pushed back Thursday on a Washington Post series charging that U.S. military, diplomatic and elected officials through three administrations misled the American people about progress in the Afghanistan war.

The newspaper's series was based on documented interviews that amounted to hindsight "by individuals giving retrospectives years later on what they may have believed at the time," Jonathan Hoffman, the chief Pentagon spokesman, said at a news briefing.

In addition, Hoffman said the interviews given to the office of Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction (SIGAR) were initially intended to become public eventually.

Those who gave interviews with the understanding that they would become public did not "show any sign of being dishonest," he said.

However, the Washington Post said that more than 400 interviews in 2,000 pages of documents were only obtained after three years of Freedom of Information Act requests and legal challenges.

When pressed on whether U.S. officials had a track record of saying one thing in private and another in public through 18 years of war in Afghanistan, Hoffman said he could not speak for the previous administrations of President George W. Bush and Barack Obama, but promised honesty from the Defense Department in the current administration.

"We're going to be open and transparent with the American people," Hoffman said, although the Pentagon in the Trump administration, like the White House, has rarely held press briefings.

In late August, Mark Esper held the first news conference by a sitting defense secretary in more than a year.

Schiff called 'hypocrite' as past comments criticizing Clinton impeachment emerge

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., arguably the most visible face of the impeachment inquiry into President Trump, has brushed off GOP criticism that the spectacle leaves him ignoring critical pieces of legislation and his own constituents in California’s 28th District.

But 20 years ago, Schiff was using that same argument when he first ran for Congress against Republican incumbent James Rogan.

“I think impeachment for most people in this district is only the most graphic illustration of an incumbent who has put the national partisan, ideological fights ahead of representing his district,” Schiff, then a California state senator, said during an interview with NBC at the time regarding Rogan’s role in the impeachment of President Bill Clinton. “People want to decide this on the basis of who’s going to serve our community.”

Schiff, who ended up defeating Rogan for the state’s 27th District seat in what was then the most expensive House race in history, made his opponent’s involvement in the Clinton impeachment a key talking point during his time on the campaign trail in 1999 and 2000.

“Jim Rogan is in trouble for reasons that have nothing to do with impeachment,” Schiff told the Boston Globe in 1999. “I think a lot of people are unhappy that Jim Rogan has ignored the district for five years.”

He added in an interview with the Associated Press that Rogan’s constituents were “relegated to a lower-tier priority compared to the national, partisan agenda.”

Schiff’s comments are now coming back to haunt him as he runs for re-election next year, with his Republican opponents dredging up such past statements amid his lead role in the impeachment push against Trump.

China Detains CEO Of US-Listed P2P Firm Fincera

In a crackdown against peer-to-peer lending, Chinese law enforcement officers raided the Beijing offices of a New York-listed lending company and have detained the chairman for suspected financial crimes, reported the Financial Times.

Li Yonghui, the chairman of Fincera, was detained in the northern Chinese city of Shijiazhuang on Friday morning, has been accused of illegal acceptance of public funds.

FT said nearly two dozen officers raided Fincera's Beijing offices on Friday.

The company's chief technology officer and vice-president were also detained at their homes in Beijing in the early morning.

Yonghui is a Canadian national, and his whereabouts are still unknown, but according to his son, he was detained by authorities.

Fincera's stock trades over the counter in New York and has seen a 65% drop in market value this year.

China's peer-to-peer lending is contracting after years of rapid growth. The government started cracking down on the industry in 2018.

Fincera is one of the largest lending platforms in Hebei province by loans.

The Embassy of Canada to China has yet to confirm the arrest.
