There are a lot of fit, 50+ vets out there. Few could keep up with the 19yr olds on a forced march, but their sheer numbers combined with their gun collections would be a formidable defensive force.
Instead of needing them in the front line, they'll be needed for rear security. Someone has to secure the women and children.
