Levi Strauss and Co. sold by Haas family members (10% owners): $32.04m-Mar 21,'19, filed today

The Haas family struck it rich in the California Gold Rush – not in precious metals, but in denim. In 1873, Bavarian-born Levi Strauss, a dry goods wholesaler in San Francisco, saw the need for sturdy work pants and invented the first pair of blue jeans. Strauss, who had no children, left the business to his four nephews. Nearly a century and a half later, Levi Strauss & Co. is one of the biggest brand names in apparel, available in 50,000 locations in 110 countries. It's still privately held and mostly owned by the nephews' descendants. Peter Haas, Sr., and his older brother Walter Haas, Sr., who took over the business after World War II, made Levi's an international brand, and the family ran the company until 1999. Today, Peter Haas, Sr.'s widow, Mimi Haas, and his son, Peter Haas, Jr., who spent 17 years in managerial roles at the company, serve on the board of directors. Together with Peter's sister, Margaret E. Haas, and their cousin, Robert D. Haas, they own 43% of the company's shares. Another 44% is held by more than 200 shareholders, most of whom are relatives. The remainder of the stock is held by family members' charitable foundations.
