the big question is wtf was she doing in the park in the dark in that part of town. not only is it illegal to be in a park after dark, that is a dangerous park close to a dangerous neighborhood. why was she in there? she was supposedly smart if she was a student at barnard. so was it drugs? or something else.

she was not 13, one of the kids who attacked her was. yeah, ny can be dangerous but there is danger everywhere. one needs to minimize the risks by making wise decisions. even a teenager in ny knows they are taking a risk being in a park in the dark, especially where she was. she was doing something nefarious. not taking anything away from the animals who killed her, but come on. why was she in the park. the only thing i can think of is that she was buying drugs. unfortunately, people from small town usa move here not knowing there are areas they need to be extra careful in. there are nice neighborhoods literally surrounded by bad neighborhoods (a result of gentrification) and they think they are safe in their little bubble. they usually are in the daytime, but nighttime is a whole different story.
ok, i finally see your point, 13 killing on the 13th, although it could also be because he is unusually young to be part of a gang killing people, even for nyc (but i guess that is part of your point as well)
