Visiting Kimberley Diamond Mine in South Africa

Kimberley, South Africa, is home to the world’s largest diamond mine, also known as the “Big Hole.” Dug by humans and so large it is visible from space, the pit has yielded some of the world’s largest diamonds and made the De Beers name famous worldwide.

At Kimberley visitors can view a 17-minute movie about the location and the history of diamond mining in Africa. They also get to walk out on a high platform to view The Big Hole, take a ride down a faux mining shaft, enter a locked vault to view genuine diamonds of all colors, and visit a small museum.

There is also a café, gift and jewelry shops, and many structures and artifacts left from the days when Kimberly was a thriving mining town. Visitors can walk the eerily empty streets of the company town and step into the modest home where the De Beers family lived.

Those who arrive at Kimberley’s Victorian railway station by train then travel to The Big Hole via motorcoach, about a ten-minute drive.

Sudan's former president Bashir gets two-year sentence for corruption

Court also confiscates €6.9m found at 75-year-old's house

A Sudanese court on Saturday ordered former president Omar al-Bashir to be detained for two years in a correctional centre for corruption in one of several cases against the ousted autocrat.

Bashir, who was toppled by the army in April after months of mass demonstrations, was convicted of graft and "possession of foreign currency", judge Al Sadiq Abdelrahman said.

The court ordered the 75-year-old to serve two years in a correctional centre for the elderly.

"Under the law, those who reached the age of 70 shall not serve jail terms," the judge said.

EU heavyweights urge halt to military actions in Libya

Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte issued a joint statement after their meeting in Brussels to discuss latest developments in Libya, on the sidelines of an EU summit.

“The leaders call on all Libyan and international parties to refrain from taking military action, genuinely commit to a comprehensive and lasting cessation of hostilities and re-engage into a credible UN-led negotiation,” the statement said.

The joint statement came after eastern Libya-based commander Khalifa Haftar announced that he would launch a new offensive to capture the capital Tripoli.

Merkel, Macron and Conte stressed that a solution to the Libya conflict could only come through a political solution, and underlined their full support for the UN Special Envoy Ghassan Salame’s efforts for a settlement.

They also called for stronger efforts to gather a long-planned international conference for a political solution to the Libyan conflict.
