1,000-year-old papyrus Bible seized in northwestern Turkey

Turkish security forces on Friday seized a bible estimated to be over a thousand years old in an anti-smuggling operation in northwestern Turkey's Bursa province.

Provincial gendarmerie forces, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid into a house in the Osmaniye neighborhood of the city's İnegöl district. The handwritten Bible appears to be in the Aramaic language and is inscribed on papyrus.

Four suspects, including two potential purchasers who were revealed to be in contact with the smugglers, were detained in relation to the smuggling incident.

Thousands of anti-smuggling operations are carried out across Turkey every year to halt the illegal sale of historical artifacts and protect the country's rich cultural heritage. The issue is crucial to a country that is home to the ruins of some 3,000 ancient cities from 42 civilizations and whose tourism industry relies heavily on the preservation of its heritage to attract millions of foreign visitors each year.

Florida high school seniors need to take a civics exam because too many lack “basic knowledge" about the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the country’s other founding documents, Gov. Ron DeSantis said Tuesday.

The governor said he’d directed the state to give 12th graders a civics test similar to the one taken by those seeking to become naturalized U.S. citizens.

DeSantis offered history lessons and praise of America’s founders as he announced his plans at an event in Naples. He quoted Benjamin Franklin’s famous line — “A republic, if you can keep it.” — to argue that to succeed, the country needed citizens who understood how and why America’s government was created.

Indiana prison technology exec arrested in child sex case

The arrest of Thomas W. Francum, 51, on two felony counts of child molestation followed a four-month Indiana State Police investigation, according to an ISP release issued Wednesday evening.

Francum was placed on unpaid suspension Aug. 30, the same day ISP detectives with a warrant searched his leased home on the grounds of the Pendleton Correctional Facility.

His accuser was younger than 10 when the alleged sex crimes first happened, which reportedly occurred from August 2010 to August 2016 at the leased home, the ISP stated.

Francum was booked into the Madison County Jail and later was released after he posted 10 percent of his $20,000 bond, online jail records show.

Barrett, Rogers consider declassifying secretive space programs

SIMI VALLEY, California — The U.S. Air Force’s top civilian and a key member of Congress agreed Saturday on the need to declassify a large amount of information about America’s military space programs to both intimidate foes and encourage support among the public.

“Declassifying some of what is currently held in secure vaults would be a good idea,” Air Force Secretary Barbara Barrett said during a panel at the Reagan National Defense Forum. “You would have to be careful about what we declassify, but there is much more classified than what needs to be.”

Fellow panelist Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., said he met with the secretary earlier in the week to discuss that very issue, calling the information on space programs “overwhelmingly classified.”
