You are exactly right. The US being a producer rather than an importer again has many people freaking out.
If we wanted to get ahead of the power curve, we would back currency with a precious metal that is going to have more significance in the future than gold does as a store of value today. Something that will be in increasing demand for new electronics, etc. Palladium or platinum would be a better choice, or a rare earth metal we have an abundant supply of here vs. the rest of the world.
