Airports of the future: surveillance by design

As we’ve seen in the ongoing debate over biometric identification of travelers at Sea-Tac Airport, and as we’ve seen before elsewhere, airlines and government agencies want to pretend that each of their initiatives to identify and track travelers is a discrete, limited project, not part of any common agenda for government and commercial surveillance.

Don’t believe a word of this soothing blather. These measures are part of a conscious, deliberate, and (in their internal communications) explicit plan to deploy pervasive, integrated common-use infrastructure and data sharing for government and commercial identification and tracking purposes throughout airports and each step of an air traveler’s journey. The airline/airport/government consensus is on surveillance by design, not privacy by design.

Here’s our latest glimpse at the real thinking behind the curtain of propaganda: The leading provider of communications and IT infrastructure and services for air transportation has a guest commentary of end-of-the-year predictions for “airports of the future” on an industry news site:

Trump Administration Setting Up Padded Cell for Guantanamo Detainees

The nightmare that is Guantanamo never seems to end. Even before President Donald Trump reversed an Obama Administration order to close the detention center at Guantanamo — an action never completed — the Pentagon issued a formal solicitation for material to construct a padded cell at the Cuba-based prison.

Padded cells in psychiatric hospitals are used to supposedly safely contain violent patients. Some legal authorities have condemned the use of padded cells, which “involves a form of sensory deprivation, in that the prisoner is denied the opportunity of any meaningful interaction with his human faculties of sight, sound and speech — an interaction that is vital if the integrity of the human personality is to be maintained.”

On January 19, the Department of the Army listed a solicitation for materials (number W91WRZ-18-Q-0016) at the website of the General Services Administration, explaining the padding was meant for a “US Government mental health or psychiatric room in a detention medical facility” at “US Navy Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.”

Here’s Where Hillary’s Been HIDING

Hillary Clinton has been laying low, out of the spotlight altogether. Many are saying she’s sick while others are claiming she’s plotting her next move in politics. One former aide who knows the Clintons better than anyone else just spilled the beans on Hillary, revealing where she’s hiding, and he also told the American people about the one thing she is doing, proving she knows that she is guilty of crimes. This will blow your mind.

Dick Morris, the longtime Clinton family adviser, knows Bill and Hillary better than anyone. Morris helped Bill win the White House, and then, after years with them, he resigned. He turned the tables on the Clintons, becoming a vocal critic, and he knows exactly why Hillary has been on the down-low since she lost.

“We can deduce what’s going on in the Justice Department because Hillary hasn’t barked. In effect since inauguration day, or really since Election Day she [Hillary] has conceded the leadership of the Democratic party to Barack Obama, who continues to lead it from the grave, or at least from exile,” said Morris.

John 8:14

“Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.”

[Alteration of Middle English Ăľe, the (from the use of the letter y to represent the letter thorn in early English printing).]

Usage Note: In an attempt to seem quaint or old-fashioned, many store signs such as "Ye Olde Coffee Shoppe" use spellings that are no longer current. The word ye in such signs looks identical to the archaic second plural pronoun ye, but it is in fact not the same word. Ye in "Ye Olde Coffee Shoppe" is just an older spelling of the definite article the. The y in this ye was never pronounced (y) but was rather the result of improvisation by early printers. In Old English and early Middle English, the sound (th) was represented by the letter thorn . When printing presses were first set up in England in the 1470s, the type came from Continental Europe, where this letter was not in use. The letter y was used instead because in the handwriting of the day the loop of the letter thorn was often not connected to the upright, and so the thorn looked very similar to y. So spellings like ye for the, yt or yat for that, were not only common but survived into the 1800s. However, the modern revival of this archaic form of the has not been accompanied by a revival of the knowledge of how it was pronounced, with the result that (yē) is the usual pronunciation today.
