>why were we not asleep?

During the 1960's presidential campaigns I had reason to be on stage (sometimes behind the scenes) with most of the candidates at one time or another, sometimes several different events with the same person.

Richard Nixon, Hubert Humphrey, Eugene McCarthy, Spiro Agnew, Ed Muskie. All were unspeakably arrogant, rude, vainglorious, deceptive, hateful, miserable little bastards. It was like being in a septic tank up to your neck being around them. I realized then that decency in politics is a rare and precious thing.

Had I known then what I know now, I could have saved America decades of grief very easily. This is why grown men drink.
