I personally believe it is only because of God and that he destines a person to stand outside the system, less affected by (or saved from) the brainwashing. Like He did with his prophets in the OT.
But anyway - with living things (and the associated randomness) even the most powerful "treatment" does not work all the time, every time, on everything. Like bleach can kill 99.x% of bacteria but there will always be a small percent that survives it.
