Lapis Lazuli was primarily sourced from Eastern Afghanistan in antiquity. Before modern chemistry, all pigments where derived from naturally occurring minerals or plant dyes. For millennia, Lapis would have been a luxury only affordable to the very wealthiest (cabal psychos)

 

It's interesting that Latium was a small deposit source of Lapis in Italy, that may have spurned the wealth and expansion of the Roman territory.
