Local Man Creates Bracelets For POW

Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, 25, is the only living U.S. serviceman from Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan known to be in captivity. In June 2009, Bergdahl was leaving his base in Afghanistan for reasons that remain unclear. Since then the soldier from Idaho has appeared in five Taliban videos showing him in captivity.
In one of the videos, Bergdahl said, "Well, I am scared scared I won't be able to go home. It is very unnerving to be a prisoner."
Local attorney Jim Roberts has made it his mission to make sure people do not forget Bergdahl. Roberts is not a relative nor is he in the military. He said he was just touched by Bergdahl's story.
"What I'm hoping to accomplish is to raise public awareness that Bowe is out there, to encourage people to pray for Bowe and to think about Bowe every day," said Roberts.
Using his own money, he's created special yellow wristbands that have Bergdahl's name, rank and date of capture. Roberts has already sent 1,000 of them to troops in Iraq and plans on passing them out to soldiers at Camp Pendleton in a few weeks. He has also made bumper stickers that feature Bergdahl's picture.
Roberts said the hope is that people will learn about Bergdahl, talk about him and pray for him and that by spreading the message, he will one day come home.
"I believe very strongly that the more people that pray for Bowe, the stronger that prayer message will be and the more likely Bowe will be back home soon," said Roberts.
Roberts said he keeps in touch with Bergdahl's family.
When comparing notes, he discovered they both had ancestors that lived in Harlan, Iowa, in the late 1800s who surely knew each other.

On 26 February 2012, U.S. military officers knocked on the door of the family home in Ann Arbor, Michigan, with news that Army Staff Sgt. Ahmed Al-Taie was confirmed dead. The remains of Al-Taie were turned over as part of an amnesty exchange agreement between the Iraqi government and the militant group Asaib Ahl al-Haq. Al-Taie's family believes he was killed at the end of 2008.

Surgeon, 68, who 'kept a diary of horrific sex attacks on children' may have raped as many as 349 victims over 30 years in France's worst-ever paedophile case, prosecutors say
A retired French surgeon may have raped or sexually abused as many as 349 children over his near 30-year career, a prosecutor investigating what could be France's biggest-ever paedophilia case said today.
Joel Le Scouarnec, 68, a specialist in abdominal surgery, is set to go on trial in March for the rape and sexual abuse of four child victims.
Allegations against him cover the three decades he practised in hospitals across central and western France including the Hospital de Jonzac.

Senate approves funding to deepen the Charleston Harbor
Money is one step closer for the Charleston Harbor deepening project.
When complete, it will be the deepest harbor on the eastern seaboard.
Right now, the Charleston Harbor is 45 feet.
The project will deepen it to 52 feet, so bigger cargo ships can get in and out without relying on the tide.
Thursday, the Senate approved $138 Million dollars for the project.
The port brings in more than $60 Billion dollars of economic activity.
South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham calls it a “giant step forward.”
In a statement, he says, the “News ensures our port will continue to benefit South Carolina and American business in perpetuity.”
He goes on to say, “My goal from the start has been clear– I want Charleston to be a premier port on the east coast. With today’s vote we are on our way to turning that goal into reality.”
President Donald Trump is expected to sign the legislation giving the project the $138 million dollars sometime soon.

1,200 detained in India amid ban on citizenship law protests
Police detained more than 1,200 protesters in some of India’s biggest cities Thursday after they defied bans on assembly that authorities imposed to stop widespread demonstrations against a new citizenship law that opponents say threatens the country’s secular democracy.
At least three people were reported killed as protests raged around the country despite the bans as opposition increased to the law, which excludes Muslims. The legislation has sparked anger at what many see as the government’s push to bring India closer to a Hindu state.
Authorities erected road blocks and disrupted internet and phone services, including in parts of New Delhi, and tightened restrictions on protesters in the northeastern border state of Assam, where the protests began last week.
A curfew was imposed in parts of Mangalore, a city in southern Karnataka state, after police fired warning shots and used tear gas and batons to disperse a large group of protesters.

German parliament passes measure urging government to outlaw Hezbollah activity
The German parliament on Thursday passed a resolution calling on the government in Berlin to outlaw activities of the Iranian-backed, Lebanese terrorist organization Hezbollah.
The nonbinding motion was supported by the two major parties that make up Germany’s ruling coalition, as well as by a small opposition party called FDP, thus passing with a large majority. The other three parties in the Bundestag abstained. No one voted against the resolution.
During the debate some critics noted the resolution was effectively less than a ban of the organization.

Chris Wallace: What may be driving Nancy Pelosi's impeachment delay
"Fox News Sunday" anchor Chris Wallace believes House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may be trying to frustrate President Trump by withholding the articles of impeachment from the Senate, as the two chambers have reached an impasse on how to proceed.
Wallace pointed to a Fox News interview Thursday with Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., where he described Trump as "mad as hell" about the impeachment and the possibility of being "denied his day in court."
"The reason they're denying him his day in court is because they know their case sucks," Graham emphatically stated.
Wallace said he interprets Graham's comments to mean that Trump is frustrated and is eager for the Senate trial to begin.
"This is really getting under President Trump's skin. He wants a trial. He wants the acquittal. Basically to the degree possible to erase the stain of impeachment. And to the extent that Nancy Pelosi holds that up, he doesn't get what he wants. So I think what she may be counting on is that somehow the president will start pressuring [Sen.] Mitch McConnell," Wallace said.
McConnell, R-Ky., incredulously returned to the Senate floor late Thursday to declare that the Senate and House Democrats were at an "impasse" over whether the House would transmit its articles of impeachment against President Trump to the GOP-controlled Senate for a constitutionally mandated trial.
McConnell, speaking after a meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said the top Democrat had insisted on "departing from the unanimous bipartisan precedent that 100 senators approved before the beginning of President [Bill] Clinton's trial" concerning logistics.
