I think our country was caught by surprise by this stuff in the 30's and 40's, and it took us the better part of a century to catch up and develop it for our use. If that shit went public before we had the ability to provide assurance that we could defend our nation to advanced tech, then it seems likely that bad actors would have stolen it and used it to destroy us.
No, it had to be developed it in secrecy for decades in order to be ahead before public disclosure could happen. Along the way, control of our progress seems to have changed hands several times between white hats and black hats (mostly black until recently) installed throughout all levels of the government and military. But now the ultimate white hat has control and won the war.
In my opinion I think Space Force will mark the beginning of a new era of major disclosure.
