Marcescent Hardwoods

Marcesence refers to deciduous plant foliage dying but not dropping. In the West, it is illustrated by coastal trees such as the red oaks (Quercus rubra and Q. shumardii). Planting a red oak may seem risky due to the ongoing battle of many coastal oaks with the pathogen Phytophthora ramorum, which causes sudden oak death disease. However, it is easy to enjoy the winter color of red oaks on city streets and college campuses. Marcescent trees retain leaves due to lack of a separation layer found between leaf stalks and branches on other deciduous trees. This layer allows leaves to break away without wounding branches.
