Congress OKs covering Taliban travel expenses, with conditions

Congress is allowing the Pentagon to spend up to $15 million this year for logistical support for peace talks in Afghanistan, and lawmakers have tried hard to ensure the money does not effectively benefit the Taliban.

But the Pentagon, in requesting the money earlier this year, said it is "likely" some of the funds will at least indirectly help the Taliban, and the authors of the new defense authorization measure had to explicitly exempt the proposed spending from laws that bar aid to terrorist groups.

CQ disclosed in May how the Pentagon had asked Congress for the money and statutory authority necessary to enable U.S. military personnel in Afghanistan to cover costs of possible local peace talks – for security, transportation, lodging, food, supplies, communications and other services.

Some call the spending a small price to pay for bringing warring parties to the table after nearly 18 years of conflict.

5 earthquakes in less than a day rattle secretive Navy base in Mojave Desert, USGS says

A cluster of earthquakes shook a secretive Navy base in the Mojave Desert on Thursday afternoon and before dawn Friday, geologists say.

Numerous small quakes hit in and around the Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Five of the quakes were higher than 2.5 magnitude between 3 p.m. Thursday and 3:30 a.m. Friday in Ridgecrest, the USGS said.

The base, deep in the California desert near Death Valley National Park, is where the Navy develops and tests its newest weapons.

A massive 7.1 magnitude earthquake on July 6 was also centered on the base and forced the evacuation of the massive installation, according to KLTA.

That was the biggest earthquake in the area in two decades, according to the USGS.

A series of major earthquakes in early July around the Navy base, about 150 miles from Los Angeles, drew worries about “the big one”

The earthquakes this week were much smaller: The worst were between 2.6 and 3.1 magnitude, according to the USGS.

Ted Cruz Blasts Spending Bill: Funds Planned Parenthood, Gun Control

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) blasted the $1.4 trillion spending bill that passed the House and Senate this week and was signed into law by President Donald Trump on Friday.

The 2,313-page piece of legislation spends $1.4 trillion and will fund the government until September 30, 2020, through most of what is anticipated to be a combative election season.

“Deals cut in the dead of night,” Cruz asserted in a Twitter video message this week that summarized some of the provisions in the spending package:

The senator said the spending deal benefits the “lobbyists who are bankrupting this country,” and told CBS 11 it represents “lobbyists’ Christmas present.”

“While you were with your family, shopping for Christmas, the lobbyists were spending and spending,” Cruz said in his video message.

“Nobody’s read it,” Cruz said as he puffed on a cigar. “There isn’t a person alive who has read this piece of garbage.”

Cruz called out some of the items in the bill that were included without debate and a separate vote. He noted, for example, the spending deal “extends the Export-Import Bank for seven years.”

The bank, which provides loans to promote the foreign purchases of U.S. goods, is “one of the greatest corporate boondoggles – corporate welfare,” the senator asserted.

The massive spending bill also raises the tobacco purchasing age to 21.

Cruz ridiculed this provision, citing that soldiers can be drafted at age 18, but “God help you if you want to have a smoke.”

The senator pointed out the spending bill also “funds government research on gun control.”

“Can’t you wait for the report from the Centers for Disease Control … bogus studies that are going to be used to take away your constitutional rights,” Cruz stated.

The senator added that the spending bill:

– continues tax breaks for “so-called” renewable energy

– fails to stop sanctuary cities

– fails to defund Planned Parenthood and fails to end Obamacare

While a pro-abortion rights amendment proposed by New Hampshire Democrat Jeanne Shaheen – one that would have undermined Trump’s pro-life policies overseas – was not included in the final spending package, America’s largest abortion business, Planned Parenthood, remains funded by taxpayers.
