Two Quebecers linked to ultra-nationalist group arrested for allegedly threatening Trudeau, Muslims

Two people with links to the far-right ultra-nationalist group the Storm Alliance have been arrested for inciting hatred and encouraging others to commit premeditated murder.

RCMP officers arrested one of the two for inciting genocide against the Muslim community in comments posted to Facebook in addition to the other charges.

An RCMP spokesperson declined to comment to CTV News on the precise nature of the threats.

“They were sufficiently concerning for to take action,” RCMP spokesperson Melanie Cappiello-Stebenne said, adding she did not know the ages or genders of those arrested.

Cappiello-Stebenne said the two people were not currently being detained, but were questioned and have yet to be charged.

The RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement Teams began investigating the two people in September, and the truck driver from the Lanaudiere region and Montrealer who identifies as a member of the Storm Alliance are suspected of calling for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's murder during the last election campaign, according to La Presse.

Along with the arrests the RCMP seized pieces of equipment, including computers.

Nancy Sirois is an administrator of the Storm Alliance Facebook group and posted Saturday that the group has disassociated itself from the individuals who were arrested.

They were, she wrote, kicked out of the group several months ago "for similar behaviour and words which we do not subscribe to at all."

"We cannot be held responsible for the behaviour of every citizen acting on their own initiative," Sirois wrote.

An exchange between the two people on Facebook allegedly discussed Trudeau being shot in the forehead, and was accompanied by a photo of a vandalized campaign poster of Hochelaga Liberal candidate Soraya Martinez with a Nazi swastika covering the Liberal logo.

The RCMP investigation found several publications related to Trudeau or the Muslim religion. Comments range from mocking Trudeau for wearing a flak jacket during a campaign stop to references to the Quebec City mosque shooting and the mass-killing in Christchurch, New Zealand, according to La Presse.

>Arizona Officer Kills Qatari Man Who Attacked Him

Police: Arizona officer kills Qatari man who attacked him

An Arizona state trooper shot and killed a Qatari man who was in the U.S. on a student visa after he violently attacked the officer patrolling for drunken drivers along with a member of the group Mothers Against Drunk Driving, authorities said Friday.

The state trooper spotted 25-year-old Mohamed Ahmed Al-Hashemi throw a street sign onto a road in suburban Phoenix late Thursday and ordered him to pick it up, said Col. Frank Milstead, director of the Department of Public Safety.

Al-Hashemi wouldn’t pick it up, then began walking in the middle of the road and wouldn’t obey commands to stop, Milstead said.

Trooper Hugh Grant used a stun gun but it didn’t subdue Al-Hashemi, who then rushed the officer and punched and kicked him.

“It was a vicious encounter,” Milstead said before showing dashboard camera video of the attack. “He was in a fight for his life.”

The video shows the men tussling, and at one point, Al-Hashemi throws Grant to the ground.

The trooper fired his weapon, killing Al-Hashemi, the DPS chief said.

Grant feared for his life and the life of a woman riding along with him as a member of the group also known as MADD. Police often allow private citizens and journalists to come on “ride-alongs” while they patrol.

“When he began to realize this was escalating, he was trying to keep her out of danger,” Milstead said.

Authorities said they didn’t know if Al-Hashemi was impaired. The trooper had injuries to his face and head and is resting at home.

Authorities say Al-Hashemi was arrested for trespassing at the Islamic Community Center of Tempe on Wednesday. Police in the Phoenix suburb of Tempe responded to a disturbance at the mosque around 4:30 a.m. At the center’s request, officers gave Al-Hashemi a warning and told him not to return, police spokesman Greg Bacon said.

Al-Hashemi returned in the early afternoon and officers were called again. Bacon said he was then arrested on a misdemeanor charge of trespassing and booked into jail.

It’s unclear how long Al-Hashemi has been living in the U.S. He was a former student at Arizona State University, which is based in Tempe, according to school officials. They didn’t provide other details.

The government of Qatar, a small, energy-rich nation on the Arabian Peninsula that’s home to the forward headquarters of the U.S. military’s Central Command, did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday. Like other Gulf Arab nations, Qatari students regularly go abroad to the U.S. for their studies.

The Islamic Community Center of Tempe didn’t immediately respond to calls and emails seeking comment.

Julian Assange’s mother Christine breaks her silence and reveals her agony as her son remains in jail

Distraught that her son remains in the notorious Belmarsh prison, Australian Christine Assange said she has nothing to mark.

“All I want for Christmas is my son Julian to be home safe with his family, under the protection of his country, to be free from this nine-year unlawful and brutal political persecution and to heal from the human rights abuses and torture which have damaged his mind and body,” said Ms Assange.

Unable to speak with her son since he was jailed earlier this year, Ms Assange said all she has for Christmas this year are memories.

“Our Christmases were never boring. Julian would delight the children in the family with special Christmas performances,” said Ms Assange, in her first interview since his imprisonment.

She revealed he would delight the children with a trick involving shaving sparklers and putting them in the mouth of a tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur toy, lighting it, giving the impression that he was alive and breathing fire.

She said Julian had a lot of fun with his own son Daniel, decorating the Christmas tree.

“He was a devoted, innovative and playful father,” she said.

“Julian would love to string up the fairy lights …. we would make homemade decorations together.

“Julian’s Christmas presents were always very thoughtful. “He chose presents for the children in the family that would encourage curiosity, creativity and inventiveness.” “He would give me art books and materials because he knew I had a passion for art.”

“I really miss our family Christmases … they have never been the same without him. There is something missing. We haven’t had a proper family Christmas since he has been detained … nothing is the same”.

“If he ends up in US hands, there will be a show trial and there will be nothing fair or just about it. He will never see the light of day again. He is accused of engaging in multi-award winning journalism, not hurting anyone.”

Ms Assange has urged the Australian public to support the fight to stop Julian’s extradition to the United States to face espionage charges and to urge the Australian Government to bring Julian Home

Assange, an Australian citizen, is facing 175 years prison if extradited to the US and convicted on espionage charges.

The unprecedented prosecution relates to the publication of documents provided to WikiLeaks by whistleblower Chelsea Manning.

Assange attracted the attention of the United States when Wikileaks and several media outlets published hundreds of thousands of secret US documents and a video about the war in Iraq and Afghanistan which contained evidence of war crimes.
