Stephenson's book was fiction, but manipulation of human consciousness and behavior by means of contagious self-replicating structures is not. The use of behavior changing images, sigils and glyphs which act below the threshold of consumer awareness, is what the advertising industry does.

The work was done parallel rather than serially or sequentially. Few if any of the prestigious institutions who accepted the funds knew any more that that they were doing “national defense” research. When the time came the largest and most sinister mind and social control research program in history became the biggest C_A cover up, pitched to the US public as C_A’s shameful and embarrassing disclosure now safely past it will never and can never happen again.
Our nations’ spooks complained in private about how Admiral Stansfield ‘Burner” Turner cut the agencies balls off and blamed him for the loss of the “family jewels” but the 1977 Senate Select Committee on intelligence hearing learned nothing, because the hearings were stage managed by C_A to “force” embarrassing revelations that barely scratched the surface before absolving C_A with a stern warning. The senators commended the agency and congratulated each other for their candor & integrity. The hearings were over.
