Judicial Watch Sues Adam Schiff for Phone Snooping Records

Judicial Watch has sued the House Intelligence Committee and its chairman, Adam Schiff (D-CA), on Friday for records relating to Schiff’s phone snooping on his Republican counterpart, a journalist, and the president’s lawyer.

Schiff included phone logs purporting to document communications between Intelligence Committee Ranking Member Devin Nunes (R-CA), journalist John Solomon, and presidential lawyer Rudy Giuliani, among others, attempting to implicate them in a plot to smear the reputation of then-U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, whom President Donald Trump had constitutional authority to fire for any reason, regardless.

A press release from Judicial Watch explained:

The phone records led to the publication of the private phone records of Giuliani, Congressman Devon Nunes, journalist John Solomon, Trump attorney Jay Sekulow, attorney Victoria Toensing, and other American citizens.

Judicial Watch filed the lawsuit under the public’s common-law right of public access to examine government records after it received no response to a December 6, 2019, records request (Judicial Watch v Adam Schiff and U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (No. 1:19-cv-03790)):

All subpoenas issued by the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence on or about September 30, 2019 to any telecommunications provider including, but not limited to AT&T, Inc., for records of telephone calls of any individuals;

All responses received to the above-referenced subpoenas.

Judicial Watch accused Schiff of abusing his power. Schiff allegedly used a subpoena to AT&T for the records of several unidentified phone numbers in an apparent attempt to conceal the fact that he was trying to reconstruct the phone conversations of his intended targets, which he then published in the Intelligence Committee’s impeachment report. Schiff did not cite any legal authority for his actions, which arguably violated the First, Fourth, and Sixth Amendments to the Constitution..

Nunes has said that Schiff violated his civil liberties, and that he will pursue all legal options; the White House responded by noting that one of the phone numbers in the report was incorrect.

U.N. Imposes Strict Gender Quotas on British Army for Africa Jihadi Fight

The United Nations has placed strict gender quotas on a British Army peacekeeping deployment to Mali in west Africa, demanding more females are sent under the auspices of a special bureaucratic directive.

At least 250 soldiers are expected to join the U.N. peacekeeping force helping France to contain the deadly Islamist jihadi threat in the disputed Sahel region, the Daily Express reports.

The call for more female UK soldiers to be included is part of a wider set of directives drafted by the U.N. that mandates strict quotas for female personnel in the name of equal opportunity.

Under Uniformed Gender Parity Strategy targets, 15 percent of military observers and staff officers must be women by next year, while the figure for female “boots on the ground” is 7.5 percent.

It means the British Army will have to field at least 18 female soldiers in order to comply during the Mali deployment.

Senior planners involved with preparing for the mission expressed their fury.

“The British Army embraces gender equality. We feel it’s the right thing, and a good thing,” one senior officer told the newspaper.

“But equality cuts both ways. This is about our ability, as planners, to choose the most appropriate soldiers for the task at hand, be they men or women.

“It’s true that we are joining a U.N. peacekeeping operation, and not France’s parallel mission. However, we anticipate that this will be a highly kinetic operation.”

The officer questioned whether bureaucrats sitting in their offices in the U.N. building in New York rather than being out in the field have any notion of the absurdity of the request.

“Frankly, to be forced to comply with a tick-boxing request which doesn’t address the immediate realities of the challenges we face is ludicrous.”

The United Nations has 13,000 peacekeepers in Mali, which ranks among its biggest and costliest missions. France has 4,000 troops serving across the Sahel region in five countries (Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Chad) in Operation Barkhane, launched in 2014.

Since 2013, at least 44 French soldiers have died in the mission that has created little public debate in France.

A criminal complaint has been filed after it was revealed that Germany’s Defence Ministry wiped data from the phone of its former boss and new European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen — echoing similar incidents involving Hillary Clinton in the United States.

Green Party defence spokesman Tobias Lindner filed a criminal complaint over suspected deliberate deletion of data from Ursula von der Leyen’s official phone from her time serving as Germany’s Defence Minister.

“We have to assume that people in office destroyed evidence. Such actions can have criminal relevance”, said Lindner in comments reported by Deutsche Welle.

“First they said von der Leyen’s phone could not be found, they didn’t know where it was. A week ago they said it was in the ministry, but only von der Leyen knew the PIN code, and yesterday they confessed that the relevant phone data had been deleted in August”, he added.

The revelation of Von der Leyen’s deleted data comes amidst a corruption investigation in Germany over military spending and possible cronyism in the process of awarding military contracts.

These Are All The International Brands That Have Apologized To China

The definitive list of international companies that have issued apologies to maintain their market access in China in recent years. Plus, a record of the even more widespread phenomenon of self-censorship for the Chinese market.

By now, pretty much everyone has noticed - or should have noticed - how much influence China holds over many international corporations.

Much of the awareness can be attributed to the ongoing NBA-China controversy, where a sports league known in the U.S. for its progressive values is being forced to stay deafeningly silent on the decidedly un-woke policies of the Chinese government in order to keep NBA basketball in Chinese stadiums and on Chinese TV.

But other brands of many types, ranging from fashion and luxury labels to hotel groups and even a medical device company, have all been strongly condemned by the Chinese government and on Chinese social media in the past few years. Increasingly, these companies have bent to pressure and issued apologies, some of them groveling, but almost all of them containing remarkably similar phrases about “respecting China’s territorial integrity.”

Before this summer, China’s two most commonly stepped-in political hotspots for international companies were Taiwan and Tibet. Now, Hong Kong has joined that list. With massive pro-democracy protests erupting in Hong Kong in June and continuing today, any activism — even perceived activism by brands — about the political future of that city by foreigners has become anathema to Beijing.

Tibet is officially an Autonomous Region of China, Hong Kong is a semi-autonomous Special Administrative Region, and Taiwan is a de facto independent country. But Beijing makes claims of total sovereignty to all these, and even the slightest suggestion that the regions should have more autonomy from Beijing or that — in the case of Taiwan — it should be treated as the de facto independent territory that it is, is viewed as a great offense by Beijing and many Chinese nationalists.

Republicans attack Pelosi for impeachment stalemate

President Trump’s allies in the House and Senate blasted Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) Sunday morning for delaying sending the House’s articles of impeachment to the Senate for trial.

Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) said on CNN’s “State of the Union” that “frankly, I don't think the speaker has the right to do this."

"I think it's a mistake on the Speaker's part. I think this will look pretty political," he added.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) called the delay “bizarre," contrasting it with what he called a “rush” to hold the vote last Wednesday.

“I just think it’s kind of bizarre they had to rush to this impeachment vote, and then all of a sudden she’s sitting on it,” Johnson said on ABC's "This Week." “I don’t think the Senate should be making the case the House should have made in their presentation. My guess is they weren’t able to make the case.”

The impeachment process is on pause after the House voted last week to approve two articles of impeachment charging Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Pelosi has delayed sending the articles to the Senate for trial in an attempt to maintain leverage for Democrats in the upper chamber as they hammer out procedures for the Senate trial. The move has drawn praise from Pelosi's caucus even as Senate Democrats appear eager to receive the articles. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has shrugged off the tactic, saying he's "not anxious to have the trial," while Trump said he is eager to be acquitted by the Senate.

Democrats hope to use the tactic to convince the Senate to call several administration witnesses.

But Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who served as a House impeachment manager during the Senate’s trial for then-President Bill Clinton, meanwhile, told Fox’s Maria Bartiromo that he doubted any senators would vote to compel testimony from acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney and former national security adviser John Bolton.

“I can’t imagine any senator doing this to the presidency. I hope senators will not vote to compel witnesses before the court determines whether or not there’s executive privilege,” he added.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) said on Sunday that Pelosi was doing “exactly the right thing,” telling CBS’ “Face the Nation” the speaker “is focusing a spotlight on the need to have a fair trial in the United States Senate."

"And it's especially necessary when you have Mitch McConnell, Sen. McConnell, who you quoted earlier, saying publicly that he is not going to be an impartial juror, even though that's what the oath will require, that he's going to work in lockstep with the president, who is the defendant in this case, and that he’s already said no to calling fact witnesses that have direct knowledge of what's at stake in this impeachment," he added.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) warned against senators from both parties announcing how they intended to vote ahead of the trial.

"How can they hold their hands up and say I swear impartial justice…they should not have done that," Durbin told CNN’s Dana Bash.

"As far as I'm concerned they can tell which way they're leaning or how they feel in terms of the probability but when it comes to saying, 'I've made up my mind, it's all over,' for goodness sakes that’s not what the Constitution envisioned,” he added.

High Court to consider if an indicted Netanyahu can form government

Law offers no clear standard for PM’s eligibility in case of indictment; court ruling against him could play into his claim he is a victim of an ‘attempted coup’

The High Court of Justice on Sunday said it had agreed to hear a petition arguing that it is against the law for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to form the next government.

The court said the hearing would take place December 31 at 9 a.m. before a three-judge panel led by Chief Justice Esther Hayut and including Deputy Chief Justice Hanan Melcer and Justice Uzi Vogelman.

The court also asked Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit to produce a legal opinion on the question of Netanyahu’s eligibility to return to the prime minister’s chair, and to hand it to the court at least 48 hours before the hearing.

Russia will respond to US sanctions without damaging itself - Lavrov

Russia’s top diplomat noted that he had never thought that US politicians would go that far to slap these decisions, which do no credit to serious political actors

Moscow will retaliate against Washington’s sanctions without hurting itself, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with the Bolshaya Igra (Big Game) program on Russia’s television Channel One.

"We will respond to sanctions but in a way not to hurt ourselves. But we will definitely respond. And we will certainly take this into account when building our relations," Lavrov said.

Russia’s top diplomat noted that he had never thought that US politicians would go that far to slap these decisions, which do no credit to serious political actors. "I find it very hard to understand the situation because I either knew indirectly or directly the majority of these Congressmen, members of the House of Representatives, Senators, mostly from the Democratic Party," Lavrov said.

The US Congress approved the National Defense Authorization Act for 2020 fiscal year (started October 1) that requires the US administration to introduce sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 and TurkStream Russian gas pipelines. On December 11, the House of Representatives backed the document, while US President Donald Trump signed it into force on Friday.

Rudy Giuliani is legitimately fearing for his life these days.

On Friday he sat down with Glenn Beck to reveal more details of the REAL Ukraine collusion.

Rudy Giuliani, President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, sat down with Glenn Beck at Turning Point USA’s Student Action Summit on Friday to reveal the multibillion dollar money laundering schemes he says he uncovered during his recent trip to Ukraine to investigate corruption.

Giuliani said the corruption in Ukraine most likely started in 2012 during the Obama administration and involved at least two major schemes, one for $7.5 billion and another for $5 billion.

He backed his claims with bank and court records that show a million-dollar money trail leading from Ukraine to a fake company in Latvia, then to Cyprus, and finally to the board members of Burisma, the Ukrainian natural gas firm whose board included Hunter Biden and business partner Devon Archer.

“I’m in a lot of trouble,” Giuliani told Glenn. “I’ve uncovered an eight-year-long money laundering system, that started probably in 2012, with $7.5 billion laundered by [Vitkor] Yanukovych, the [Ukraine] president at the time — pro-Russian president at the time. He laundered through American institutions, interestingly, controlled by Democrats.”

Iran to take 5th JCPOA step if Europe fails to fulfill commitments: Shamkhani

A senior Iranian official has warned that the Islamic Republic would take the fifth step of scaling back its commitments under a landmark nuclear deal it clinched with major world powers in 2015 if the European signatories to the accord did not take practical measures to salvage it.

"Tehran has started different steps to reduce its peaceful nuclear commitments in order to maintain and balance its commitments under the JCPOA (the nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) and if the Europeans fail to fulfill their obligations, we will take the fifth step," Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said on Sunday.

US President Donald Trump, a stern critic of the historic deal, unilaterally pulled Washington out of the JCPOA in May 2018, and unleashed the “toughest ever” sanctions against the Islamic Republic in defiance of global criticism in an attempt to strangle the Iranian oil trade.

In response to the US unilateral move, Tehran has so far rowed back on its nuclear commitments four times in compliance with Articles 26 and 36 of the JCPOA, but stressed that its retaliatory measures will be reversible as soon as Europe finds practical ways to shield the mutual trade from the US sanctions.

As a first step, Iran increased its enriched uranium stockpile to beyond the 300 kilograms set by the JCPOA.

In the second step, Tehran began enriching uranium to purity rates beyond the JCPOA limit of 3.76 percent.

In the third phase, after the Europeans failed to meet a 60-day deadline to meet Iran’s demands and fulfill their commitments under the deal, Iran started up advanced centrifuges to boost the country's stockpile of enriched uranium and activated 20 IR-4 and 20 IR-6 centrifuges for research and development purposes.

In November, Iran began injecting gas into centrifuges at the Fordow plant as part of its fourth step away from the JCPOA under the supervision of the IAEA.

Three French executives convicted in the suicides of 35 of their workers

The company, France Telecom − which used to be state-owned and is now known as Orange, one of France's largest corporations − was fined $120,000, the maximum penalty. Its ex-chief executive, Didier Lombard, was sentenced to four months in prison and fined $23,000, along with his former second-in-command and head of human resources.

The spate of suicides, which happened more than a decade ago, came as the company underwent a massive restructuring. Then France's national telephone company, France Telecom embarked on an aggressive plan to cut 22,000 workers and shift another 10,000 into new jobs − all between 2006 and 2008. Most of the employees, because they were civil servants, could not be fired.

So, prosecutors said, the company's executives tried to make workers' lives so miserable they would leave voluntarily. Lombard, speaking to senior managers in 2007, reportedly vowed, "I'll get them out one way or another, through the window or through the door."

In many cases, suicide notes blaming the company accompanied them. In court, the Associated Press reported, one was projected on a large screen, reading: "I am committing suicide because of my work at France Telecom, it's the only cause."

For years, however, the company downplayed the suicides, calling them not statistically surprising for a workforce so large.
