Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had to be rushed to a bomb shelter amid a rocket attack near the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, reports said.

The Jewish leader was on stage at a campaign event in the Israeli city of Ashkelon, about 8 miles from the Hamas-controlled Palestinian territory, when warning sirens suddenly went off and he was quickly ushered to a nearby shelter, the Times of Israel said.

The rocket, fired from Gaza, was shot down by an Israeli Iron Dome air-defense interceptor, Reuters said.

It was the second time since September that the prime minister had to be evacuated from a campaign event under such circumstances. The September rocket attack, in nearby Ashdod, led to last month’s Israeli assassination of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad leader suspected of ordering it.

Netanyahu returned to his campaign event in Ashkelon after about 15 minutes — and with a defiant warning.

“The person who fired the rocket last time is no longer with us,” he said.

“The person who did it this time should start packing their things.”
