The USAF and US Army are well-equipped to down enemy drones with Patriot missiles – but they face the mad mathematics of using a $3MILLION high-tech piece of ordnance to take out a $200 hobby shop craft.
But now lasers are about to change the game.
Late last year military hardware giant Lockheed Martin blasted five high speed drones out of the sky with an armoured car-based laser.
The Athena system used a 30Kilowatt laser – and military analysts have suggested a 100kw system would be the base line. But the laser’s undeniable success caught the eye of the US Army and Air Force.
The test co-incided with a recognition among US Army top brass that while millions had been spent on combatting long range threats little had been done to counter short-range air defence threats such as drones.
